UPM Energy is the second-largest electricity producer in Finland, generating electricity mainly through nuclear and hydropower. In hydropower, flowing and falling water is converted into electricity. Each of our hydropower plants operates under a specific hydrological permit, and we ensure compliance with the regulations set within these permits.
Approximately 37% of our electricity capacity comes from hydropower. Over the past 20 years, we have been systematically modernizing our hydropower plants. This has led to improved production capacity making it possible to produce up to 15 percent more electricity with the same volume of water.
We collaborate at multiple levels, both internally and externally, engaging with the UPM Sustainability team, researchers, authorities and local stakeholders. One key area of cooperation is flood protection, where we work alongside authorities and regulators to mitigate the severe impacts of flooding.
The construction of hydropower plants has led to the damming of rivers, altering stream waters, and transforming their ecosystems. To mitigate the impact on fish stocks, annual fisheries payments are mandated in the hydrological permits for each power plant.
