Bio plastic, bio-based plastic
Plastics that are made wholly or principally from materials sourced from biomass, rather than fossil fuels.
Comment: It is important to note that there can be different types of bioplastics. Some are technically identical to fossil-based plastics, e.g., polyester – so the main sustainability benefit is fossil fuel use reduction. Other bioplastics can be biodegradable, bringing other sustainability benefits. It is therefore important when making claims about bioplastics, that we are clear about the types and associated benefits.
