UPM Sustainability Claims Glossary aims to provide clarity on what a range of sustainability-related terms mean and how to use them right. It also offers examples of the terms which should be avoided and/or used carefully. It is addressed to UPMers only.

The terms are divided into five different categories by theme:

Carbon, climate and Life Cycle Assessment
Circular economy and biochemicals
Forestry and biodiversity
Social Responsibility
Greenwashing and related concepts

Here a couple of hints and tips to ease the use of the Glossary:

The terms used both in the Basic Guideline and Practical Instructions are marked in italics.
Some terms are mapped under topic-headings, such as those related to climate/carbon claims.
The majority of the terms are supplementary to the guideline and instructions. I.e., they do not appear within the text, but are substantial to consider and understand when making sustainability claims.
Some of the terms are followed by a ‘Comment’. The comment can relate to a term that requires extra explanation or context, or a case when the use of term requires extra attention.
