Our target is to improve our energy efficiency globally by at least one percent every year. Since 1997, we have conducted regular energy audits at our mills. We have certified Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) at all our production sites, and most of our energy-intensive sites have certified Energy Management Systems (ISO 50001/ ETJ+).
Our pulp and paper mills are the largest energy consumers, requiring substantial amounts of energy for processes such as pulping, pumping, and drying. At the same time, many of our sites not only consume energy but also generate it to meet their own demand. We produce steam and part of the electricity on-site using co-owned combined heat and power (CHP) plants, hydropower, electric boilers, and heat recovery systems wherever feasible. Biomass-based fuels already account for approximately 80% of our fuel consumption at production sites, significantly reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
In addition to producing energy for our production, we also operate energy assets in Finland, supplying energy to the markets.
Both on-site generation and consumption are continuously monitored and evaluated for potential efficiency improvements, through investments, process optimization, or innovations, for example.
