Local air quality

We consider the emissions caused by our operations holistically and set and adjust our long-term targets accordingly. We have advanced our air quality targets consistently by improving our energy generation processes and investing in advanced flue gas purification technology.

Where CO₂ emission has more global impact, NOx (nitrogen oxides) and SO₂ (sulfur oxides) are two major groups of air pollutants that have impact mainly locally at production sites.

One of our climate-related KPIs is to reduce acidifying flue gases (NOx and SOx) associated with an average UPM product by 20% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.

The following table lists the sources of various emissions at our sites and the measures we have taken to minimize their negative impact.

Where energy is generated through incineration at our sites, the release of air emissions is carefully regulated and controlled.

We adhere to laws and standards related to noise pollution and ensure that we control light pollution by using it only where needed and minimizing scattered light at our production sites.

In terms of logistics, we have entered into a long-term charter agreement with the Dutch company Spliethoff Group. The company has designed and built us seven vessels, operating on European routes mostly on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which result in a significant reduction in NOx (approx. 85%), SO₂ (approx. 99%), and CO₂ (approx. 25%) emissions compared to the more commonly used marine gas oil.
