Product safety

Product safety is at the core of our stewardship, covering the entire process from design and production to end-of-life recycling. For all chemicals we use, we comply with all relevant regulation requirements and commitments.

We design our products so that they are safe for their intended uses and comply with laws and regulations. Potential product safety issues can be associated with improper design, manufacturing defects or subsequent handling or use. Methods and tools used by our product safety professionals to mitigate the risks include hazard analysis, risk assessment and control approaches.

Supply chain’s role in safety

All chemicals used in our production have an important role in the manufacturing of safe products. Chemicals we use are subject to a strict approval process in the product and operations development phase. The chemicals chosen must fulfill functional and operational demands, but they must meet various legislative, environmental, and occupational health and safety requirements for the whole lifetime of a product.

Safety throughout value chain

In addition to regulatory requirements and voluntary commitments, such as ecolabels, we have defined specific criteria to control the use of hazardous chemicals.
All chemicals selected for use in our products are required to have the minimum adverse effects on human health, the environment, and safety, as defined in our Chemical Management Standard.
The list of restricted chemical substances includes compounds on the European Chemicals Agency's (ECHA) list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) or those with properties harmful for human health or environment including endocrine-disrupting or persistent properties.
Our approval process covers raw materials, direct process additives, and maintenance chemicals. Products intended for food contact or children's use undergo rigorous testing in accordance with food contact regulations or EU Harmonized Toy Standards.
At the end of a product’s life cycle, we ensure it can be safely disposed off or efficiently recycled.
