We require our pulp suppliers to:
- Utilize the best available techniques to minimize environmental impact, ensuring continuous improvement in environmental performance.
- Implement credible forest certification schemes to ensure that raw materials come from legally harvested sources.
- Meet EU Ecolabel criteria when supplying pulp to UPM mills that produce EU Ecolabel-certified products.
- Report annually on environmental performance as defined by UPM.
Supplier evaluation
We have a systematic supplier evaluation process and KPI collection in place. Suppliers must report the origin of wood, the percentage of certified wood used, and the environmental impact of their production plants.
We also track social indicators, such as accident frequency and land tenure rights at plantations. We store this data in our environmental pulp database.
We use the EU Commission’s indicative emission levels for Best Available Techniques (BAT) to benchmark our mills and suppliers. Pulp suppliers must report on their operations and KPIs annually. Key statistics, such as certified wood usage, are monitored monthly.
Additionally, UPM Pulp Sourcing conducts audits based on risk evaluations covering environmental and social responsibility, and all new major suppliers undergo audits.
