"UPM and UNICEF Finland share an ambition to create lasting impact for children through education. We are extremely pleased with UPM's long history of supporting children through UNICEF. Building on this strong foundation, this strategic partnership will create even greater long-term benefits for children and societies. UPM's support comes at a time when children around the world are increasingly affected by geopolitical instability and other global challenges," says Annina Tanhuanpää, Executive Director of UNICEF Finland.
"UNICEF has been one of the partners in our Share and Care program. The Global Education Thematic Fund is UNICEF's most strategic tool for helping children access quality education worldwide. Its flexible, multi-year funding lets UNICEF respond quickly to crises, strengthen education systems for the long term, and scale proven solutions across countries. That's the kind of impact we want to help create," says Saara Tahvanainen, EVP, Marketing, Sustainability and Communications at UPM.
UNICEF works in 147 countries to help children and young people gain the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. In 2025, the Global Education Thematic Fund received $12.1 million in partner contributions, and allocations were made to 42 countries.
Education creates opportunities
Education remains one of the most effective ways to reduce inequality, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for future generations. Millions of children continue to face barriers to education and skills development, limiting their opportunities and future potential.
For UPM, the partnership provides an opportunity to deepen its understanding of the rights and needs of children and young people as important future stakeholders. Employees will also have opportunities to learn more about UNICEF's global work and participate in future initiatives and awareness campaigns that promote children's rights and well-being around the world.
