A sustainable choice for both structure and finish
A recent studio project in Almere shows what that means in practice. The space was shell-only: a 30 m² sloped ceiling, walls one and a half stories high, no cover strips or finishing battens. Every corner had to close seamlessly. WISA-Spruce Special was not the obvious choice for this application, but Pronk knew it would deliver the precision the design demanded. The result: a minimal, seamless interior where the wood does the work.
“Many people see it as construction plywood, which it is. But applied properly, it is also a beautiful finished surface. With another material, it would look flat and dead. The wood makes it come alive.”
In the Almere studio project, the environmental aspect was especially important for the customer.
“For them, the environmental point was a showstopper. The product had to tick all the boxes.”
WISA-Spruce Special’s documented environmental credentials helped support the material choice. Made from sustainably sourced, FSC™- (FSC C009856) and PEFC- (PEFC/02-31-112) certified wood, the product is supported by a third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration and meets E1 formaldehyde and M1 emission classifications.
In the Netherlands, verified environmental data for WISA-Spruce Special is also available through the Nationale Milieudatabase, helping construction professionals use product-specific data in environmental performance calculations.
Environmental aspects are something that customers are increasingly interested in, Pronk says.
“Since I started my own business, I have been surprised by how many customers ask about things such as glues, formaldehyde and environmental performance. These are details people want to know about.”
