Environmental impact from forest to the gates of UPM Kalso veneer mill
Reviewed by an independent third party, the LCA summary provides information about the product’s environmental impact from the forest to the point where the parquet veneer leaves the UPM Kalso veneer mill, which is commonly referred to as cradle to gate.
LCA summaries have a slightly narrower scope than EPDs, which cover a product’s full life cycle from cradle to grave. An LCA summary focuses on the early stages of the production process, including raw material sourcing, energy and material consumption, transportation to the mill and the manufacturing itself.
Supporting sustainable choices
LCA evaluates the product’s environmental impact across several categories, such as climate change, ozone depletion and water and resource use.
“These summaries help our customers meet their sustainability goals. With these calculations, they can take environmental impacts into account when selecting materials and use the LCA data to calculate the carbon footprint of the final product,” says Sanna Kontinen, UPM Plywood’s environmental manager.
UPM also uses LCAs to improve its own operations.
