During my studies I often considered the forest industry, especially forestry, as an interesting business area to work in. However, without a forestry degree, I thought that my chances were quite low of reaching this "dream" of mine. It was one of those "give me a sign" moments, when UPM forest opened this graduate position during the month I graduated from university. They offered an interesting position within forestry operations and there was no need for a forestry degree. "No forestry degree needed?! This is my time." I remember taking a screenshot from the job posting and sending it to my family, telling them this position is meant for me. After a long recruiting process, I was lucky to receive the position and to start my journey with UPM.
My graduate time is coming to an end, and looking back, I could never have imagined what a journey was ahead of me. Reflecting on this past year, I can confidently say that it has been truly a year that has impacted my growth both professionally and personally.
During this year I've had the opportunity to lead and conduct a project in Private Sourcing, which significantly contributed to my professional development. I also explored global forest affairs team, where I had the opportunity to familiarize myself with sustainability topics related to international forestry. But beyond all the professional skills that I've learnt, what has truly stood out are the people. I had the privilege of learning from some of the most knowledgeable and welcoming forestry professionals - people who made me feel like part of them from day one. I now understand what someone meant when they said, "There's no workplace quite like UPM Forest". I visited several local forest offices across Finland, and in every one, I was greeted with warmth and generosity. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of forestry but also sparked a personal interest that I'll carry with me as a future forest owner.
One of the most unforgettable parts of my graduate year was a 9-week work rotation in Uruguay in Forestal Oriental. There, I encountered the same incredible forestry spirit I had experienced in Finland. From the daily good morning hugs to my first taste of mate, traditional herbal drink, I was welcomed with open arms. During my time there, I had the opportunity to explore nearly the entire forestry supply chain. It was eye-opening to see how plantation operations differ from those in Finland - an experience that broadened my perspective and enriched my understanding of global forestry practices and sparked my love for the country.
I may be biased, but I truly believe there's no spirit quite like the forestry spirit. I have definitely "felt good about my work" while working in UPM and I'm excited to continue my journey now in a different role within the company. This graduate year has been more than just a career steppingstone - it's been a year of professional and personal growth, unforgettable experiences, and meaningful relationships. It's truly a year I will always cherish.
