UPM Graduates Life: Deep dive into sourcing development

Meri Kalke

UPM Graduate

After summers spend working at an equipment manufacturer, a software company, and an engineering consultancy, I decided that it was time to jump to the other side of the table. It has been great here.

I graduated from Industrial Engineering and Management at Aalto University in spring 2024 and kicked off my career as a Graduate in the global sourcing organization for paper businesses. Raw materials sourcing for the paper industry is a perfect match for my background, because it requires diverse understanding of technologies, processes, markets, and business.

The work at UPM began at full speed. I was included in supplier negotiations on my third day and started leading different development projects from the very beginning. I have been working on various projects in the sourcing space including supplier quality, strategic sourcing, operative procurement, and reporting. The projects have taken me to many of our paper mills, because understanding our supply chain and production processes is crucial for successful sourcing development.

After a flying start in the Helsinki office, I relocated to Changshu, China for my 3-month rotation in the UPM Specialty Papers mill. I worked on a reporting development project, and participated also in supplier visits, negotiations and audits. The highlights of my time in China were visiting a supplier’s limestone quarry and, of course, getting to know our awesome colleagues and experiencing Chinese culture with them.

My time as a Graduate has given me a broad understanding of raw material sourcing in the paper industry, which will help me excel in my future career as I start focusing on more specific responsibilities. In my opinion, the UPM Graduate programme is amazing for individuals who are motivated and proactive in leading their own work. The Graduates are trusted with complex projects, and we can often determine the course of how the project is carried out. At times, it has felt like a huge challenge. Now as my time as Graduate is nearing the end, I am so grateful for getting this opportunity and proud of myself for taking it.

As a bonus I would like to highlight the amazing class of the 2024 Graduates. Hearing from each other’s work helped me understand UPM way beyond my own responsibilities, and most importantly, we have had a lot of fun along the way as well.
