Over the past few years UPM’s performance and consistent work in the field of corporate responsibility has received recognition from many external parties. Here are some examples:
UN Global Compact LEAD
In September 2018 we were again honoured to be named a Global Compact LEAD company for our committed engagement to the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. UPM is one of only 34 global companies to receive this recognition alongside other leading corporations.
UPM has enjoyed LEAD status since January 2016. We are the only forest industry enterprise and the first Finnish company to be invited to join this distinguished network.
To be eligible for LEAD recognition, companies are expected to be active on at least two Global Compact Action Platforms. They must also demonstrate engagement in defining and fostering leadership practices in line with the Global Compact Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, they must report annually on their progress in implementing the Ten Principles.
UPM participates in two Action Platforms: Reporting on the SDGs and Decent work in global supply chains. The Decent Work Action Platform members have today published their commitment to advance responsible supply chains and a Baseline Report describing the challenges and opportunities of this work. Read more here.
The Reporting on the SDGs Action Platform has already earlier published two reports and a guidance document for SDG reporting.

In January 2019 we were ranked on the 23rd place in the list of 100 most sustainable corporations by the Corporate Knights, the Canadian-based media and research company. We are the only company listed in the Paper and Forest Products category.
Corporate Knights analysed some 7,500 companies with revenues more than USD 1 billion. The Global 100 Index use determined quantitative sustainability indicators, including carbon productivity (revenue-to-tonne-CO2 ratio), the percentage of taxes paid and board gender diversity, for example. 50 per cent of each company’s score measures the percentage of revenues earned from products and services that have environmental or well-defined social benefits.
