UPM Logistics has its own fleet that annually transports approximately 1,500,000 tonnes of cargo to and from various customers and suppliers. It provides cost-effective, tailormade and adaptable logistics services for both UPM’s own businesses and external customers.

The service portfolio is comprehensive, including Liner Shipping Services, System Shipping Services, Project Transportation, Customs Clearance, Logistic Administration, Business Process Support & Analytics, Cargo Care and Safety & Security services.

We have a modern fleet on European routes that harnesses the latest technology and digital autonomy assets, with a strong focus on environmental efficiency.

Customer satisfaction is the key driver of UPM’s operations. By offering reliable, responsible and cost-competitive services, we create added value across the whole logistics chain.

UPM has set long-term emission reduction targets for 2030

We are committed to the UN’s Global Compact’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C, joining leading companies in a promise to pursue science-based measures to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. We are also the only forest industry company who has joined The Climate Pledge by Amazon and the Global Optimism, a cross-sector community of world-class companies working together to crack the climate crisis and to decarbonise our economy.

UPM strives to mitigate climate change and drive value creation through innovating novel products, committing to a 65% CO2 emission reduction, and by practicing sustainable forestry. We have also set a 2030 target to cut the CO2 emissions of our supply chain by 30% from 2018 levels.

Committed to Baltic Sea Action Group’s Ship Waste Action

On 8th June 2022 we published our latest commitment to the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG). We are the first Finnish company, acting as a shipper and charterer, to discharge our ship-generated wastewater on land and to utilise various circular economy solutions in wastewater treatment. The new model will be implemented in the ports of Rauma, Hamina, Kotka and Pietarsaari in Finland.

The commitment has been made for the years 2022-2026, and it will focus on promoting BSAG's Ship Waste Action initiative. The initiative aims to establish a model whereby cargo ship effluents are discharged at the port, and their nutrients are recycled through circular economy solutions.

In addition to discharging wastewaters on land, UPM and Baltic Sea Action Group together will explore the opportunities to discharge the cargo hold washing waters on land for possible further reuse.

Eco-smart fleet equipped with modern technology

In years 2022-2023 we have lauched a fleet of seven new environmentally smart vessels for sea transportation in Europe.

Read more in our press release: seven new environmentally smart vessels, which are to be built and owned by Bore Ltd & Wijnne Barends BV and operated by UPM

The new vessels run on dual fuels, which means a combination of traditional marine gas oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The fleet is designed for the digital age, carrying on-board cutting-edge technologies to monitor emissions, reduce fuel consumption and optimise mariner work and safety. All vessels are ice-strengthened to ice-class 1A and meet the latest technological, operational and environmental standards. When fuelled with liquid natural gas (LNG), their CO2 emissions will be 25% lower than those of commonly used marine gas oil. In addition, nitrogen oxides (NOx) are cut by about 85% and sulphur oxides (SOx) by approximately 99%. Emissions of soot particles are also decreased by 99%.

Time-chartered vessels on European routes

We offer shipping services aboard time-chartered vessels on routes between Finland and Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, and Spain.

We also offer scheduled liner traffic solutions on routes between Finland and Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, and ports of call can be added to the rotation whenever needed. Additionally, we own a number of roll-trailers and have experience in shipping everything from project cargoes and roro-units to high and heavy cargo, containers and windmill equipment.

On the system traffic side, we offer weekly, biweekly and monthly service from Finland to Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, UK and France. We typically carry forest industry volumes southbound and raw materials northbound, but our versatile fleet can carry any break bulk, bulk, and project cargoes both ways.
