Replacing fossil-based virgin materials with renewable alternatives

In recent years, customers have demanded packaging solutions that use sustainable alternatives to the more traditional fossil-based plastics.

Bioplastics have existed for some time, but they may not be compatible with other packaging materials and can be found lacking when qualities such as airtightness and waterresistance are required. Furthermore, while such materials are made from biomass, they tend to require virgin raw materials for production.

SOLUTION

From pulp residue to sustainable film

UPM Raflatac Forest Film™ is a new kind of labelling solution which meets customer calls for renewable solutions that replace fossil-based materials. The product is a 100% wood-based solution which originates from sustainablymanaged forests. It utilises UPM BioVerno naphtha, developed by UPM Biofuels to give new life to residue from the pulp process.

Crucially, the performance of the Forest Film is identical to that of traditional plastic films. It is a sustainable solution that requires no compromise on properties or quality.

BEYOND FOSSILS

A Product of the Circular Economy

Forest Film is a product borne out of UPM’s circular way of thinking in all operations and processes. This ensures that no usable material goes to waste before being utilised to its full potential. UPM Raflatac is an early signatory to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment that seeks to move beyond fossils for new labelling solutions.

UPM is using decades of expertise and innovation to move towards a world in which fossil-based materials are a thing of the past. Forest Film is just one exciting example of how fossil-based materials can be replaced by renewable alternatives.
