UPM’s GrowDex® cellulose nanofibril hydrogel was recognized as a significant innovation with great future potential by the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland. The members of the award winning GrowDex team come from UPM and the University of Helsinki.
The Chemical Industry Federation of Finland hands out the award every other year to innovations which are seen to be of great benefit to the well-being of both humans and the environment and which have the power to make a difference both in the everyday-life of people and as a commercial successes on an industrial scale. The GrowDex team was one of the two teams given the 2016 Innovation Award at the ceremony on Thursday 28 April. Åbo Akademi was awarded for their next generation flame retardant.

The GrowDex® hydrogel is a result of interdisciplinary research by UPM and a team of researchers from the University of Helsinki’s Department of Biopharmacy. UPM has commercialized GrowDex® for 3D cell culture applications such as pharmaceutical research and development. GrowDex® is biocompatible with human cells and tissues. The award given to the innovation is also a recognition to UPM for bravely moving into new areas of research and development.
“GrowDex® hydrogel is our first product for biomedical applications. The role of our co-operation partners and Tekes has been significant as we have started this project from basic research. We appreciate the recognition given to us by the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland. It encourages us to continue our work,” says Pia Nilsson, Senior Manager, Head of GrowDex at UPM.
UPM Biochemicals works closely together with life science experts
The UPM Biochemicals innovation unit at the Biomedicum research and educational centre in Meilahti, Helsinki focuses on biomedical applications for the cellulose nanofibril technology developed by UPM. Co-operating with the best of the best in the life science field is paramount as UPM continues its search for the best application possibilities for its biomaterials.
