Less CO2 emissions

Minimising the use of fossil fuels is the most important way to mitigate climate change. Our ambitious goal is to reduce CO2 emissions from fuels and purchased electricity by 65 percent from the 2015 levels by 2030. We also aim to reduce the emission levels of our supply chain by 30 percent.

Energy efficiency and emissions to air

We strive to improve our energy efficiency in everything we do. Our target is to improve our energy efficiency by 1 percent every year.  Over the last 20 years, the energy efficiency of our production has significantly improved thanks to energy audits, innovations and internal campaigns.

Low-carbon energy sources

Fossil carbon-free energy sources make up most of UPM’s energy portfolio. We use hydropower, nuclear power and efficient combined heat and power (CHP) using mainly biomass at our mill sites. Renewable, CO2-free energy is preferred also on power purchases.

Carbon footprint

Carbon footprint is an indicator that measures and communicates the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted both directly and indirectly in the production and delivery of goods and services. Raw materials, energy consumed and transportation are the main elements used to calculate the carbon footprint of a product.

Environmental and social performance

UPM's Interactive Analyst tool allows you to compare a wide selection of UPM’s responsibility data and create your own reports based on your preferred indicators.
