High cetane number, low emissions - The renewed St1 Diesel plus contains UPM's Finnish renewable diesel

Press Release 6.5.2015 14:21 EEST

(UPM and St1, 6 May 2015) Finnish energy company St1 has renewed its Premium class diesel fuel. Distributed across the entire St1 network, the new Diesel plus is an extraordinary diesel fuel that combines state-of-the-art technical properties with UPM's new wood-based renewable diesel that is manufactured in Finland. The highest cetane number in the market provides instant torque, while an optimised blend of additives keeps nozzles and combustion chambers clean to enable the engine to run more efficiently and economically. The new Diesel plus fuel is suitable for all diesel engines.

Diesel plus is based on international technology that significantly enhances the technical and practical properties of diesel. With a cetane number of 60+, the fuel makes driving easier and safer thanks to the instant torque that gives extra power when overtaking on a motorway, for example. Moreover, thanks to the cleaner form of combustion and renewable diesel component, Diesel plus also reduces traffic emissions.

"Premium fuels are one of St1's strategic cornerstones, and we are constantly developing these fuels to better fulfil the needs of drivers in Finland. Diesel plus has several important properties that diesel car owners appreciate, such as instant torque. And now, we had the opportunity to start using UPM's new high quality diesel as part of our fuel mix. UPM BioVerno is produced from forest industry residues and supports efforts to replace imported fossil fuels with renewable domestic fuel", says Mika Wiljanen, Managing Director of St1 Oy.

In its own fuel production, St1 focuses on waste- and residue-based ethanol. The renewable diesel component in Diesel plus is produced by the forest industry company UPM at its biorefinery in Lappeenranta, Finland. The main raw material of UPM BioVerno is crude tall oil, which is a residue of UPM's own pulp production.

"We have made huge strides from starting the process development in 2008 to building the world's first biorefinery that produces renewable, wood-based diesel. I think it is great that the Finnish low-emission UPM BioVerno diesel is now available to Finnish consumers through the Finnish energy company St1", says Petri Kukkonen, Vice President of UPM Biofuels.

The premium Diesel plus fuel is suitable for all diesel engines, from passenger cars to heavy duty vehicles and machinery. It costs the same as regular diesel. The new Diesel plus fuel is available in all St1 stations across Finland.
