(UPM, Helsinki, 26 March 2012) – UPM joins WWF's Global Earth Hour 2012 event, and will turn off the lights at its Group Head Office in Helsinki, Finland, on 31 March 2012 from 20.30 to 21.30 local time. This is a symbolic action for UPM, with which the company wants to demonstrate its commitment to playing its part in mitigating climate change. This is the fourth time that UPM is joining the event.

UPM is continuously developing its operations in order to minimize its carbon footprint and to improve its energy efficiency. The company has invested over 1 billion EUR in CO2 neutral renewable energy generation in the past 10 years. The latest investment, new bio power plant at Korkeakoski Sawmill in Finland, was announced last week.

79% of electricity generated by UPM is free from fossil-fuel CO2 emissions and 67% of all fuels used by UPM is based on renewable biomass.

According to WWF, Earth Hour is the largest environmental event in the world. Last year the event was supported by 1.8 billion people all over the world.
