(UPM, Helsinki, 1 July 2011) – UPM ProFi is participating in a design cooperation project and supporting environmental protection at the Baltic Sea Pavilion during the Open European Championships in Olympic Sailing Classes 2011 between 30 June and 14 July. The terrace and terrace furniture of the Baltic Sea Pavilion Café in Hernesaari, Helsinki, have been manufactured from the environmentally friendly UPM ProFi Deck composite material. The pavilion has been built by SavetheC, a company that produces maritime design products from recycled sails, and a group of partners.

The terrace of the almost 100-seat café has been made of UPM ProFi Deck, shade Sunny Beige. The furniture designed by Harri Koskinen has been manufactured from Snow Blue UPM ProFi Deck and UPM WISA-Birch plywood.

"The SavetheC community and talented designers are like-minded partners for us. The Pavilion combines design and recycling in an impressive manner with the help of our composite material," says Mr Markku Koivisto, Director of the UPM ProFi Business Area.

UPM ProFi composite products are stylish, environmentally friendly and recyclable, and they do not contain any harmful chemicals. UPM ProFi can be used in a variety of outdoor applications. It is an attractive product due to both its technical characteristics and appearance.

This year, UPM ProFi became the first European wood-plastic composite manufacturer to be awarded the right to use the CE marking. The products are also PEFC forest certified.

In 2010, UPM ProFi received two important awards. A renowned Green Good Design Award was given to UPM for its innovative and environmentally friendly composite material. The Best Innovator 2010 awards brought yet more recognition, as UPM ProFi Deck was awarded with the Sustainable Innovation Management Prize. The material has become known for its use in international projects headed by leading architects. UPM ProFi was showcased as a cladding material for the Finnish Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
