(UPM, Helsinki, 25 March 2010 at 10:00) – UPM has published its new Corporate Responsibility principles in the 2009 Annual Report. The new CR principles reflect UPM's desire to approach responsibility from a holistic point of view, and therefore cover financial, social and environmental aspects of company's operations.
The foundation for responsibility is profitable operations and value creation from products which are sustainable throughout their lifecycle. A commitment to continuous improvement and transparency is embedded into UPM's approach.
UPM's CR principles cover areas that are the foundation on which the company has been developing its operations for many years already. The principles reflect what UPM is, but equally they describe what UPM wants to be. Each principle will be matched with certain measures and an action plan, programme or equivalent in order to be able to show UPM's dedication and improvement.
Sustainable development is one of the key elements of UPM's strategy as the Biofore company. "For as long as we can remember, the forest industry has known it has "the best possible story" in respect of sustainable products and operations. As the front-runner of the new forest industry it is imperative that we ensure that our stakeholders, and the wider audience, clearly understand our achievements and our future commitment to responsibility", says Marko Janhunen, Director, Corporate Responsibility & Public Affairs.
One of UPM's latest public commitments is the United Nations Global Compact's CEO Water Mandate which was signed in the beginning of 2010. The CEO Water Mandate strengthens UPM's commitment to the responsible use of water resources in all of its operations. UPM has already decreased water use per tonne of paper by 40% in the last 10 years.
UPM's Corporate Responsibility principles are described in the enclosed PDF file.
