Pulp

UPM’s pulp sourcing activities are certified as part of UPM’s global FSCTM (FSC C014719) and PEFC (PEFC/02-31-80) Chain of Custody system.

UPM requires its pulp suppliers to:

  • Use the best available techniques to minimize environmental loading and expects continuous progress in suppliers’ environmental performance.
  • Have credible forest certification schemes in place
    • The raw material of the pulp delivered to UPM must originate from legally harvested sources
    • Meet the EU Ecolabel criteria when delivering to UPM mills producing products that have EU Ecolabel
  • Report on annual basis of its environmental performance as defined by UPM.

Supplier evaluation

Systematic supplier evaluation and KPI collection is in place. Our suppliers are expected to inform us about the origin of the wood, the percentage of certified wood used, as well as the environmental load of production plants.

We also follow up social indicators such as accident frequency and land tenure rights at plantations. We store all this information in an environmental pulp database which was taken into use in 2003.

When benchmarking its own mills and suppliers, UPM uses the indicative emission levels for Best Available Techniques (BAT) issued by the EU Commission.

Our pulp suppliers must report on their operations and KPIs annually. Certain statistics such as use of certified wood are monitored on a monthly basis. UPM Pulp Sourcing additionally carries out audits based on a risk evaluation covering environmental and social responsibility issues. All new major suppliers are audited
