UPM, a global company delivering renewable and responsible solution to different markets, is participating to Textile Exhange event in Pasadena, California at the end of October. We are showcasing first prototypes of clothes made from UPM fibres originated from sustainably managed certified forests.

Fibre-based materials which UPM developes, are for growing end-uses, like fashion and textile industry in this case. These prototypes are natural in colour, containing novel MMCFs. The fibres have a cotton-like feel and can be mixed with other textile fibres.

The fibre has natural color in beautiful beige, but the fibre can be colored similarly like other textile materials. In coloring of the clothes we have now used natural color dye made of coffee manufacturing waste to ensure biodegradability of the fibre.

Differently from other textile materials, our manufacturing process aims to be more conscious in terms of CO2 emissions, water consumption, and toxic chemicals usage. We are dedicated to develop this sustainable process without compromising the fibre quality and making it an effortless alternative in the industry.

New alternative fibre for textile industry

Natural fibre

The UPM fibre has natural is beautiful colour, but the fibre can be bleached and coloured similarly like other MMCFs.

Natural colour variations

In colouring of the clothes we use natural colour agent made of coffee manufacturing waste to ensure biodegradability of the fibre.

Contemporary new alternative

The UPM fibre is a novel material alternative that aims to beat any other fibre in terms of how little of CO2 emissions is accumulated and trees used in production.

Sustainably managed forest

Our products originate from certified forests in Uruguay and Europe. As the feedstock has certifications, it allows better traceability of the raw material.

Strong supply chain

We have a strong track record in ensuring the efficiency, transparency and responsibility of our entire supply chain. We engage in long-term co-operation with selected suppliers to optimize cost, quality, sustainability and innovation.

Global, future-oriented company

We operate in all continents and deliver renewable and responsible solutions and innovate for a future beyond fossils.

Efficient manufacturing process

Further processing of the UPM fibre is no different to what processing of standard viscose would be. However, the manufacturing concept of the fibre itself differs to how viscose is manufactured. In the concept we ensure higher yield of fibre produced per single tree, we use less energy, water and chemicals. The chemicals used are recycled inside the process and thus used all over again. The fibre is not viscose even if viscose looks like it. The UPM fibre is a novel material alternative that aims to beat any other fibre in terms of how little of CO2 emissions is accumulated and trees used in production.

Chain of custody - the journey of fibres

The UPM fibre for textiles is a man made cellulose fiber (MMCF) made of Nordic Conifers from Finland. Nordic Conifers are one of the main wood species in Finnish forests that cover over 70% of the land of Finland.

The fibres are manufactured in UPM Kaukas pulp mill, in Eastern Finland. The mill has a long history and has been found in 1897. From there, the fibre material is delivered to a German company Otto for further processing as yarn. From yarn, needles are produced by a Finnish textile manufacturer Orneule. They are the largest manufacturer of knitted goods in Finland. Eventually, the end product, clothes, are manufactured by Pedrosa in Portugal.

UPM and forests

UPM, a global company from Finland offers vast variety of renewable and responsible solutions.

Wood used in our products comes from sustainably managed forests and from legal sources. All our wood supplies are covered by a third-party verified chain of custody. We aim to use certified fibre to the highest possible degree and to promote a global increase in the use of certified wood.

All of UPM’s own forests and eucalyptus plantations are certified according to the FSCTM (FSC C014719) and/or PEFC (PEFC/02-31-80) certification schemes. In addition, UPM has an FSC and PEFC Group Certificate in Finland , which are open to private forest owners.
