Our focus targets:
UN SDG Target 8.2 Achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological upgrading and innovation, including through a focus on high-value added and labour-intensive sectors
Measuring our contribution:
- We aim to have comparable EBIT growth through focused top-line growth and margin expansion. In 2018, our comparable EBIT increased by 17% to EUR 1,513 million
- Our aim is to have comparable ROE 10% that was 12,9% in 2018.
- Our net debt/EBITDA was -0.17 times in 2018. Our aim is to have it around 2 times or less.

UN SDG Target 8.5 By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value
Measuring our contribution:
- We want people to feel that UPM values and promotes diversity, and that people are treated fairly in their work environment and can advance regardless of personal background or characteristics. We aim to have 95% favourable Employee Engagement Survey Diversity and Inclusion index by 2030. Currently, responses to the Employee Engagement Survey’s Diversity and Inclusion index is 68% favourable.
- We continue to develop an inclusive and diverse working environment and review the status and actions in business. We have a continuous diversity and inclusion initiative.
- We aim to have 100% completion rate of goal setting discussions, and development plans created for all employees by 2030. In 2018, 89% of employees had completed individual goal setting or annual discussion, and 61% had a development plan documented.
- Currently, responses to Employee Engagement Survey’s question regarding learning and development were 66% favourable. We want employees to perceive good opportunities for learning and development at UPM, and aim to have 80% favourable Employee Engagement Survey by 2030.
- Our aim is to have employee engagement and enablement indices with favourable score clearly above external high-performing norm by 2030. Currently, employee engagement index is 71% favourable that is 3 ppt points below the external high-performing norm, and employee enablement index 72% favourable which is 1 ppt point below the external high-performing norm.

UN SDG Target 8.8 Protect labour rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in precarious employment
Measuring our contribution:
- Our aim is no fatalities or serious accidents in UPM operations. We did not have any fatalities, however we had two serious accidents in 2018.
- We target to have lost time accident frequency (LTAF) <1. In 2018, LTAF was 2.7 for UPM workforces and 2.9 including contractors.
- We aim to have total recordable injury frequency (TRIF) <2 which was 6.9 for UPM workforce and 6.6 including contractors in 2018.
- Currently our absenteeism rate is 3.9% which we aim to have <2% in all organisations by 2030.
- All of our production sites have an OHS management system in place. We aim that all operations have certified OHS system by 2030. Currently 44% of the sites have external certification of their OHS system.
- Majority of our sites have Health Promotion initiatives in place. Our intention is to have Health Promotion Programme in use at all UPM sites and businesses by 2030. Preparation for global UPM Health Concept is launched in 2019.
