(UPM, Helsinki, 27 October, 2008) – UPM has been actively working on the expanded Value Added Printing of Newspapers VAPoNTM study done in cooperation with PrintCity member companies.
In VAPoN project part I and II UPM showed that a good range of its papers can improve a newspaper product printed in coldset web offset. Another test print also showed that UPM's heatset web offset grades can be printed successfully in UV web printing which opens a variety of new options for publishers and newspaper printers.
"Newspaper publishers are confronted with slackening or even stagnating markets. With improved printing quality they can create new business models and attract new readers and advertisers," Hans-Joachim Kölln, Director of Marketing & Sales services tells. "It is in both the publishers' and our interest to improve the printed media platform to ensure the future of newspapers."
One of the rare ways for the newspaper publishers and printers to improve their products without any further hardware investment is the improved paper. UPM has widened its product offering to suit the new needs of the printers and publishers better.
"UPM Matt is the only coated paper, which is especially designed for coldset offset printing and offers huge potential for printers without any hardware upgrade. UPM's heatset papers, from newsprint to woodfree, provide even more extensive options for printers, who have invested in additional printing and drying equipment. Only to mention a few, UPM Finesse, UPM Fine, UPM Cote, UPM Smart and UPM Eco are used," Kölln explains.
A special VAPoN Resource Book has been published and the findings of the project are being used by all the member companies. The PrintCity project partners in the VAPoN project are UPM, manroland, SunChemical, MEGTEC, Océ, Trelleborg (MacDermid) and Eltex.
