UPM will invest 4.5 million euros in the Kaukas plywood mill in order to ensure the mill’s competitiveness and to strengthen the company’s position in the transport vehicle plywoods market in particular.

The mill’s peeling and veneer drying facilities will be modernised and a new veneer patching line and plywood packaging line will be installed. The investment project, which will improve the mill’s efficiency, is due to be completed by autumn 2005.

The Kaukas plywood mill, which is located in Lappeenranta, southwest Finland, produces yearly about 55,000 cubic metres of birch plywood. The investment and reorganisation of working hours will enable the mill to increase its production to 90,000 cubic metres. Owing to this, there are 26 open vacancies to be applied for internally at the mill which employs currently approximately 380 people.
