UPM-Kymmene has signed the United Nations' Global Compact initiative. By signing the initiative UPM-Kymmene commits itself into continuous improvement and will report to the United Nations annually on at least one development case in the area of human rights, labour rights or environmental sustainability.

"The initiative gives us the opportunity to network with other companies fulfilling their corporate responsibilities. In addition, we exchange information on best practises and improve our own efforts in the area of corporate responsibility. With the initiative UPM-Kymmene will join a group of active companies who also publicly endorse their activity," says Hannu Nilsen, UPM-Kymmene's Senior Vice President for Corporate Responsibility.

The initiative was started in 2000 by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Since it was started a number of international companies have expressed their support to the initiative.
