UPM-Kymmene Wood Products division is today opening a new R&D Centre in Lahti, Finland, as part of its commitment to stepping up its research and development effort and seeking to supply more complete customer solutions. The new R&D Centre WISA will work closely together with United Sawmills and Schauman Wood, both of which belong to the Wood Products division. The new centre is at Schauman Wood's head office, to where United Sawmills is moving its head office this summer.

The R&D Centre WISA will provide UPM-Kymmene Wood Products division, its manufacturing units and customers with product development, testing and research services based on DIN, ISO and EN standards and designed to meet customers' specific requirements. Work will include testing the properties of existing products and new raw materials as well as the further development of products and production processes. Another important function of the centre will be to provide environmental consulting services.

"We aim to provide complete solutions to meet customers' requirements. The R&D Centre's 25 highly trained staff will ensure that we meet this commitment and also that we remain one of the wood products industry leaders in research and development", says Arto Juvonen, Vice President, R&D, UPM-Kymmene Wood Products division.

The units belonging to UPM-Kymmene Wood Products have been engaged in long-term research and development work for the past 30 years, helping the division to maintain its position as a frontrunner in product development, notably in the plywood sector. "Our research and testing is designed to serve customers' businesses and to ensure that our customers get really top-class products. This is why it's so important to develop products in consultation with the customer", adds Juvonen.

The new R&D Centre will also work closely with other research centres and departments within UPM-Kymmene and, when necessary, will call on the services of outside research institutes.
