UPM-Kymmene has signed a contract with Forth Ports PLC, a stock exchange listed company based in the UK, by which Forth Ports is to develop and operate a dedicated Finnish harbour terminal at Tilbury outside London. Also taking part in the collaboration are Metsä-Serla Group and Myllykoski Paper. The contract is valid for ten years.
Forth Ports will invest about 20 million pounds in developing the harbour area. Construction work will start early in the new year.
Tilbury will handle 650,000 tonnes of forest industry products each year as well as general cargo. The port will also serve freight headed for Finland. The location of the port is optimal, both in view of UPM-Kymmene's customer base and because of the opportunities it affords for developing sea transport.
UPM-Kymmene aims to consolidate cargoes bound for the UK in the hands of few ports. Concentration of port operations will improve customer service as well as streamline distibution and reduce stock holding.
The partnership agreement entered into with Forth Ports is the first of its kind. The contracting parties believe the contract will allow for long-term development work and improve the companies' competitive position.
