Frontrunner in food safety - All UPM Raflatac factories in Europe certified according to the food safety standard2018-11-08T11:00:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM Raflatac, Helsinki, 8 November 2018 at 13&#58;00 EET) - UPM Raflatac is the first self-adhesive label material supplier to have all factories in Europe certified according to the ISO 22000&#58;2005 food safety standard. This certificate ensures that the products are designed and manufactured according to the European Good Manufacturing Practice Regulation (GMP), EU 2023/2006. The management systems are certified and regularly audited by a third party auditing company. &#160;&#160;</p> <p class="hugin">By working with UPM Raflatac brand owners and converters can simplify their purchasing processes as they do not need to separately check how the GMP compliance is met. They can also be certain that the food packaging material is safe.&#160; </p> <p class="hugin">Food safety management starts from raw materials and the design of the products, further covering the facilities and production as well as deliveries and market documentation.</p> <p class="hugin">&quot;On a practical level, food safety is present in everyday factory life. Eating and drinking is prohibited in the production area and we use protective clothing and require hand washing before entering production,&quot; says <b class="hugin">Vesa Laaksonen</b>, Director, Quality Development, UPM Raflatac. &quot;Cleanliness and pest control are taken very seriously. All this and more is being assessed once a year by a third party auditor. Additionally, our food safety teams in factories conduct internal audits in between to ensure day to day compliance and to discuss food safety topics with factory employees.&quot;</p> <p class="hugin">UPM Raflatac follows the European legislation for food safety to make sure the label material range for food is compliant within the intended use. UPM Raflatac supplies best-in-class Declarations of Compliance (DoCs) for food labeling materials. The DoCs for film face materials define the recommended use, the legal compliance of the product component and the listing of any potentially migrating substances based on the definition in the Plastic Regulation EU 10/2011. The RX family is made up of two high-tack products&#58; RX15 for polar surfaces such as metal and glass, and RX18 for non-polar surfaces such as PP and PE plastics. UPM Raflatac signs up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation2018-10-29T09:00:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM Raflatac, Helsinki, 29 October 2018 at 11&#58;00 EET) - UPM Raflatac has signed up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment among 250 organisations including many of the world's largest packaging producers, brands, retailers and recyclers, as well as governments and NGOs. The Global Commitment and its vision for a circular economy for plastic is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with UN Environment. The commitment has been officially unveiled at the Our Ocean Conference in Bali today Monday, October 29.</p> <p class="hugin">By signing the commitment UPM Raflatac wants to demonstrate its commitment to labeling a smarter future beyond fossils. By developing sustainable labeling solutions and partnerships UPM Raflatac supports brand owners in eliminating unnecessary plastic packaging and achieving their target of 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. Innovative solutions such as the RafCycle recycling concept, thin film materials, wash-off adhesives and label materials containing recycled content are good examples of how UPM Raflatac can enable the circular economy.</p> <p class="hugin">&quot;Labels are everywhere and an integral part of packaging. class="hugin">Jussi Pesonen, President and CEO, comments on Q3 results&#58;</b></p> <p class="hugin">&quot;The third quarter was excellent and sets a new benchmark for our performance. Our customer demand continued to be healthy and we were able to increase sales prices in nearly all businesses. In five of our six business areas, the price increases were sufficient to cover the impact of higher input costs. Our business model continues to deliver results. </p> <p class="hugin">Our sales grew by 6% and comparable EBIT increased by 20% to EUR 420 million. Our comparable EBIT margin reached 15.9% illustrating well our current performance level compared to the first half of the year. Operating cash flow was strong and our balance sheet was practically debt-free at the end of the quarter. </p> <p class="hugin">The biggest improver was UPM Biorefining, which achieved record quarterly earnings. Pulp, Biofuels and Timber all achieved higher prices. Biofuels reached a new level of production after the turnaround shutdown in Q2. However, our pulp deliveries were held back by temporary production issues at the Fray Bentos mill, where thunderstorms caused four production shutdowns during the quarter. </p> <p class="hugin">UPM Communication Papers overcame higher input costs and lower deliveries with higher pricing and reported good, stable earnings. Unfortunate turbine damage and downtime at the Plattling mill caused extra costs, particularly as electricity prices were high. UPM Energy benefitted from the higher electricity prices, and increased its earnings even though dry weather limited our hydropower generation.</p> <p class="hugin">UPM Raflatac and UPM Plywood performed steadily. They were able to raise sales prices and offset the cost increases. Both also encountered some headwind from unfavourable currencies. </p> <p class="hugin">UPM Specialty Papers experienced a negative earnings development despite solid demand. The main reason for this was the continued increase in pulp costs. In label papers we were able to raise prices, but not sufficiently to fully compensate for the increase in pulp costs. Environmental Impact Assessment for UPM's possible Kotka Biorefinery is ready2018-10-04T14:00:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM, Helsinki, 4 October 2018 at 14&#58;00 EET) - The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for UPM's possible Kotka Biorefinery in Finland has been completed and given to the authorities for their final conclusions. The UPM Kotka Biorefinery would produce approximately 500,000 tonnes of advanced biofuels made from sustainable raw materials for use in the road transport, marine and aviation sectors. The biorefinery's products could also be used for replacing fossil raw materials in the chemical industry.</p> <p class="hugin">The renewable and sustainable raw materials and efficient processes of the possible Kotka Biorefinery enable significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil-based fuels and products. </p> <p class="hugin">According to the EIA conducted by consultancy company Pöyry, the UPM Kotka Biorefinery would have substantial positive impacts such as increasing utilization of wastes and residues as well as decreases in greenhouse gas emissions. The decrease of the greenhouse gas emissions achieved by the biorefinery would be as much as 16% of the greenhouse gas emissions generated by Finnish road traffic &#160;- equivalent to three times the greenhouse gas emissions of a city the size of Helsinki.</p> <p class="hugin">If realized, the UPM Kotka Biorefinery would also have a very positive effect on the Kotka region's economic life and finances.</p> <p class="hugin"><img alt="" class="hugin" height="353" id="Picture 2" src="https&#58;//hugin.info/165629/I/2219307/131425.jpg" width="627" /></p> <p class="hugin"><i class="hugin">The Environmental Impact Assessment of possible UPM biorefinery for Mussalo, Kotka, in Finland has been completed. </i><i class="hugin">The proposed site is in the area of a dismantled power plant formerly run by the Pohjolan Voima energy company.</i></p> <p class="hugin">The Environmental Impact Assessment states that the UPM Kotka Biorefinery is feasible, and the possible environmental impacts can be limited by the means stated in the assessment. If the biorefinery goes ahead, the main environmental impacts will be caused by increased traffic and changes in the landscape.</p> <p class="hugin">The results of the assessment will be covered more thoroughly in a public event organized on 15 October at 17.30 in Cafe Neptunus in Kotka.</p> <p class="hugin">The EIA is part of the approximately year-long pre-study phase for the Kotka Biorefinery, looking at the feasibility of the project. EU and national policies on biofuels will also play an important role in the final assessment of this possible investment. The solution will be presented during FachPack 2018 - the European trade fair for packaging, processing and technology taking place in Nuremberg, Germany, on September 25-27.</p> <p class="hugin"><img alt="" class="hugin" height="332" id="Picture 1" src="https&#58;//hugin.info/165629/I/2217599/131160.jpg" width="592" /></p> <p class="hugin"><b class="hugin">Differentiation is the key to catch the consumer eye on the shelf</b><br class="hugin">With full wrap labeling a label encloses four sides of a pack, similar to a banderole. Thanks to this, full wrap labeling offers various possibilities in the design of the pack, and this in turn contributes significantly to increasing the attractiveness of these packs at the point of sale.</p> <p class="hugin">Self-adhesive full wrap solutions open food products to the whole world of label shapes and materials and are ideal for several types of packs, including vacuum skin packs, thermoformed MAP packs as well as trays and clamshells in a wide variety of shapes and materials. All this improves the impression and gives more opportunities to differentiate your food product on the shelf.</p> <p class="hugin"><b class="hugin">Why full wrap label makes a difference?</b><br class="hugin">Due to the labels being held in effect by the carrier material, they can be shaped to fit perfectly, e.g. with curves and cut-outs to specific food and package. This provides great flexibility with the shape and design of the label and maximizes product visibility as well as area for branding to gain superior position at the point of sale compared to linerless or a top label. </p> <p class="hugin">Self-adhesive technology provides also increased efficiency of the labeling process. With fewer reel changes in comparison to usual linerless materials, they offer savings in downtime and start-up waste, lower packaging and transportation costs, and increased storage capacity for both raw materials and finished stock. Additionally, no manual application is needed. Either there is no specific investment needed for the printing as the solution is feasible with various printing houses.</p> <p class="hugin">Full wrap with self-adhesive labels is a sustainable solution. Backing paper from full wrap can be recycled with UPM Raflatac's RafCycle® program and turned into new paper. Moreover UPM Raflatac's self-adhesive label materials for full wrap - called Raflacoat Board NXT+ FSC and Raflacoat NXT+ FSC - create a great opportunity to enhance sustainability by delivering incredible reductions in energy, water, and waste throughout their lifecycle compared to standard paper labels. United Nations recognises UPM as one of 34 Global Compact LEAD companies demonstrating world-class commitment to corporate sustainability2018-09-24T06:30:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM, Helsinki, 24 September 2018 at 09&#58;30 EET) - UPM has been recognised as a Global Compact LEAD company for its strong engagement to the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. Combining the best of functionality, efficiency and sustainability: Introducing PE 65, UPM Raflatac's thinnest squeezable film2018-08-29T14:00:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM Raflatac, Mills River, NC, USA, August 29, 2018 at 17&#58;00 EET) - As part of its commitment to labeling a smarter future, UPM Raflatac is pleased to announce the launch of its <a class="hugin" href="http&#58;//go.upmraflatac.com/PE65" target="_blank">new PE 65 film label stock range</a> in the Americas market, the company's thinnest squeezable films to-date and the thinnest PE label produced for the home and personal care market.</p> <p class="hugin">These thinner versions of UPM Raflatac's standard PE 85 films offer the same excellent conformability and squeezability and can create a seamless, no-edge look on bottles. Combined with their resistance to water, oils and chemicals, new clear and white PE 65 film constructions are a sustainable alternative for conformable and squeezable containers and tubes. These thin films do not sacrifice performance, as they are at the top of the squeezability scale.</p> <p class="hugin">Not only do labels printed with PE 65 flex with the packaging and maintain their good looks, their thinner overall construction helps printers, converters and brands run a more efficient operation. PE 65's thinner caliper means more labels per roll and longer roll lengths, resulting in fewer roll changes and less down time. On forest trips for sixth grade students will learn about the forest and introduced to the renewable products from wood2018-08-21T07:00:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM, Helsinki, 21 August, 2018 at 10&#58;00 EET) - During the autumn, UPM will organise forest trips for sixth grade students with the aim to provide a positive forest experience and tell about sustainable forestry and the forest industry. During the forest trips, the students will be introduced to the economic and recreational use of forests, conservation and the products made of renewable raw material, wood. Students will also have the opportunity to plant trees that will form a forest in the future. There are 31 schools participating in the trips and a total of approximately 1,200 students are expected to attend.</p> <p class="hugin">The forest trips will be organised in cooperation with the Finnish Forest Association and the Finnish 4H Organisation in the cities where UPM mills are situated in Finland, Kouvola, Lappeenranta, Pietarsaari and Rauma.</p> <p class="hugin">&quot;We want to offer children a positive forest experience to help building a versatile and life-long forestry relationship. Learning new was interesting and exciting. Planting trees, assessing the age of a tree, observing the various stages of forest, and how wood is present in many different everyday products, were new to many.</p> <p class="hugin">&quot;These excursions are a great way to implement a new curriculum that encourages teaching outside the classroom. Both teachers and students praise forestry education in an authentic environment with the guidance of experts,&quot; says Suvi Pessala of the Finnish Forest Association. &quot;More similar excursions are requested as it is know that experimenting and doing is the best way to learn. Forest professionals are also interested in getting to know students' thoughts about the forest.&quot;</p> <p class="hugin">Forest trips are part of UPM's Biofore Share and Care programme.
