UPM joins WWFs Earth Hour 2012 climate campaign on Saturday (March 26, 2012 )

UPM joins WWF's Global Earth Hour 2012 event, and will turn off the lights at its Group Head Office in Helsinki, Finland, on 31 March 2012 from 20.30 to 21.30 local time. UPM also encourages its employees worldwide to participate in the event at home. This is a symbolic action for UPM, with which the company wants to demonstrate its commitment to playing its part in mitigating climate change. This is the fourthe time that UPM is joining the event.

NHK interview on UPM Rauma mill (March 26, 2012 )

NHK, Japanese public broadcaster (smiliar to YLE in Finland), will interview UPM Rauma mill on Thursday, 29th March focusing on biomass in Finland. The programme will be aired on 4th of May, with the title "Europe: on the road for choosing energy" on the main terrestrial channel for 45 min along with Germany and Denmark. This will be a great opportunity for Japanese people to lean about renewable energy, especially biomass, in Finland.

UPM Raflatac opens new slitting and distribution terminal in Buenos Aires, Argentina (March 20, 2012 )

UPM Raflatac has opened a new slitting and distribution terminal in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The terminal began operations in early March and will supply both paper and film labelstocks to customers in Argentina.The new terminal demonstrates UPM Raflatac’s commitment to improving its service capabilities and product offering to meet growing demand in the South American region. UPM to rebuild biological effluent treatment plant at Pietarsaari pulp mill in Finland (March 20, 2012)

UPM will begin a large construction project at its Pietarsaari pulp mill to rebuild the mill’s effluent treatment plant. The circa EUR 30 million investment will cover the rebuild of all of the main phases of waste water treatment. The work will start immediately and is to be completed at the end of 2013. UPM donates composite decking for temporary housing in Japan's earthquake area (October 18, 2011)

UPM has donated its UPM ProFi Deck composite to architect Shigeru Ban's temporary housing project for Japan's earthquake victims. The multi-storey container temporary houses are built in Onagawa town in north-east Japan. This area was one of the worst hit by the tsunami in spring 2011. UPM's acquisition of Myllykoski is completed - The acuired businesses have been transferred to UPM
(August 1, 2011)

UPM has completed the acquisition of Myllykoski Oyj and Rhein Papier GmbH. The enterprise value of all the businesses acquired is approximately EUR 900 million. UPM will report a one-off gain of approximately EUR 40 million in the third quater. UPM estimates that the transaction will have an immediate positive impact on cash flow and a positive impact on earnings per share from 2012. UPM has announced a preliminary estimate of annual cost synergies in excess of EUR 100 million. More information click here

EU Commission has approved UPM's Myllykoski transaction
(July 13, 2011)

The European Commission has today unconditionally approved UPM-Kymmene Oyj's acquisition of Myllykoski Corporation and Rhein Papier GmbH ("Myllykoski"). Thus UPM has obtained all required regulatory clearances for the transaction. The target for the final closing of the transaction is in late July - early August. Japan earthquake

UPM Raflatac at Label Forum Japan 2010

On July 22-23, UPM Raflatac attended the Label Forum Japan 2010 at Tokyo Bellesalle Shiodome Center. Label Forum is a two-day conference that includes a table-top exhibition. It is one of the largest events in Japan dedicated to labelling. About 80 companies participated and more than 3,000 people visited the exhibition in two days. This is the first time UPM Raflatac attended Label Forum Japan. At the table-top exhibition, UPM Raflatac introduced to the Japanese customers its Raflatyre label range, A4 products, Raflex Plus and offerings of textile, pharma, and food labels. UPM Raflatac's RFID business also presented their wide range of products at the stand.

UPM's wood plastic composite clads the Finnish pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai

UPM ProFi gives a visually unique marble white facade to the Finnish Pavilion "Giant's Kettle" at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The 37,000-square-metre surface of the Pavilion is clad in 25,000 modern shingles especially designed for the project by Teemu Kurkela, a Finnish architect from the Helsinki-based JKMM Architects.

Japanese apparel and textile consortium cuts costs with RFID technology

I.T.'S International Co., a consortium of Japanese apparel and textile companies including Flandre, Teijin Group and Sumikin bussan Corp., have implemented RFID technology in store operations. The solution, providing cost savings throughout supply chain and resulting in positive effects on consumer prices, utilises UPM Raflatac ShortDipole RFID tags. This is the first large scale item-level RFID implementation for the Japanese textile and apparel industries. More information click here

Finland Film Festival

Finland Film Festival will be held in Tokyo between 24-30 October as part of Finland celebration of 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Japan. UPM Caledonian's renewable energy power plant started-up ahead of schedule

The new renewable energy power plant at UPM's Caledonian paper mill in Scotland has started-up successfully one month ahead of schedule. The project has significantly reduced the carbon footprint of the UPM Caledonian operation by replacing a fossil fuel fired boiler with a modern fully integrated biomass CHP plant.The new boiler will allow CO2 emissions to be reduced by approximately 75,000 tonnes.

Los Angeles Marathon organizers have implemented an innovative RFID solution that provides highly accurate time-tracking for road races and athletic competitions, while reducing the cost and complexity of successfully executing these large-scale events. The system, which made its debut with the 2008 Los Angeles Marathon, will make its second appearance at this year's event on May 25, 2009.

Shogakukan Inc. implements RFID solution with UPM Raflatac's tag

Japanese publisher Shogakukan Inc. has implemented RFID technology in its operations in order to substantially diminish the return ratio of unsold books. Cutting down the amount of waste is also critical. Shogakukan has estimated, that annual financial losses in Japan can increase up to a total of USD 1,600 million if some 25% of the books returned are disposed as waste. A clear benefit of the RFID implementation is also accuracy in distribution.

UPM "Magic Floor"

UPM Kymmene Corporation has launched a new electro magnetic floor coverting system that helps detect people in the room/building and how they are moving. The first contract for sales in Japan was signed with Rise Corporation, a soft ware company headquartered in Sendai selling its products to hospitals all over Japan. The system targets security in office buildings, factories, prisons, hospitals and old people's homes. It can detect how many people there are in each room and what they are doing. For instance in old people's home, the system can tell the control room when a patient has woken up, gone to toilet or if he/she has fallen on floor. More information :

UPM WISA products help build Beijing Olympic Games

UPM WISA plywood played a major role in the construction of the main spectator stand of the Beijing National Stadium, or the Bird's Nest, as it is affectionately know by locals. The concrete shuttering for the bearing structures of the stadium, mainly build with steel and concrete, was achieved by using 10,000 square meters of UPM's WISA-Form plywood. WISA-Form was also used for the shuttering forms of the Games' tennis venue and media center. WISA-Trans flooring can be admired at the Fengtai sports center's softball stands and at the spectator stands for the BMX and triathlon events.

UPM to build new technology pulp mill in China
(June 13, 2008)

UPM is planning to build a new technology straw pulp mill in China. Company has secured a suitable location among wheatfields in North China far away from the current paper mill in Changshu, Jiangsu province. The wheat fields would provide the raw material for a mill producing 100,000 tpy of new type of straw pulp that totally environmentally clean. The investment cost is estimated to be EUR 100 million. Final decision will be made next year when profitability studies have been completed and necessary permissions have been received from Chinese officials.

Nice Fair in Japan

Nice Fair, Japan's largest comprehensive trade fair for interior decoration of housing makers and retail stores and etc was held in Tokyo Big Sight on March 23-24. About 200 companies attended and 25,000 people visited for two days. This year UPM exhibited wood products, such as brushed Osmo and lacquered Laine/Tasa/Knife with Japanese brochures.

UPM Raflatac exhibited our RFID products at IC Card World on March 4-7. About 80 companies participated and more than 150,000 people visited the site in 4 days. This was our fourth time in this expo. The most popular products in our booth were for apparel and product authentication. Our RFID product range is getting wider and adding variety to our offering. This time we introduced new segment "Accessories and Cosmetics" for the first time.
