Energy

UPM, the frontrunner of the new forest industry, sees energy as a growing business area that provides several commercial opportunities.

The Energy business area manages and develops UPM’s power generation assets that are not integrated into pulp and paper mills, generating and procuring electricity for the group and for market sales. It is also responsible for UPM’s electricity distribution and natural gas procurement.

In Finland, UPM has its own power generation and is a co-owner in energy companies Kemijoki Oy and Pohjolan Voima. These generate more electricity than the company needs to secure the power supply to its own production facilities. The share of market power will further increase after the start-up of TVO’s Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant.

Energy Business Area's electricity producing capacity is altogether about 1 800 MW.

UPM's total electricity producing capacity is almost 3 000 MW including the Paper business groups's combined heat and power plants operating on paper mill sites, as well as recovery plants of pulp mills.
