Biofuels

UPM's long term target is to become a major player in Europe in the production of renewable, high-quality second generation biofuels that are currently in the development and piloting stage. UPM develops new businesses in second generation biodiesel, bioethanol and bio-oil.
BIOFUELS FROM NON-FOOD RAWMATERIALS
Sustainability of operations has been one of the main criteria for development of the biofuels business. UPM's biofuels production is based on non-food-rawmaterials and results in significant reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the second generation biodiesel produced for transport use would generate over 85 % less emissions throughout the value chain compared to fossil fuels. The rawmaterial to be used in the production of UPM's biodiesel would mainly consist of sustainably sourced energy wood; logging residues, wood chips, stumps and bark.
DEMAND FOR BIOFUELS WILL GROW
EU leaders have made a commitment to increase the use of renewable energy. Renewable energy replaces fossil fuels, diversifies the energy supply and reduces the carbon emissions.
EU's climate and energy goals for year 2020 are:
- 20 % reduction of CO2 emissions
- 20 % energy from renewable sources
- 20 % improvement in energy efficiency
- 10 % biofuels in transport
The minimum 10% share of biofuels in transport is applicable in all Member States. Biofuels tackle the oil dependence of the transport sector, which is one of the most serious issues affecting security of energy supply that the EU faces.
UPM Verno - Redifining biofuels
UPM Verno is the brand name for the future biofuels of UPM. Verno illustrates the bloom of the biofuels business and the new ideas and renewal of the industry. Verno grows green.
UPM aims to become a major player in the advanced biofuels. Our target is to be a frontrunner in commercial production of sustainable, high quality biofuels. The production concepts are based on non-food raw materials and result in significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
