Paper Recycling

A balanced use of wood fibre and recycled fibre is vital for the paper industry. Recovered paper is an important raw material in papermaking, however, the input of fresh fibre is essential to make the paper cycle work. We use the optimal mix of fibre depending on the desired product.
UPM is the largest user worldwide of recovered paper for graphic papers. In 2008 UPM used 3 million tons of recovered paper in paper manufacturing. Recovered paper is used mainly for the production of newsprint and SC paper but also for other printing paper grades. UPM’s mills Chapelle Darblay in France, Schwedt in Germany and Shotton in the UK produce paper from 100% recovered paper. Other mills that use recovered paper are in Germany, Finland, and Austria.
Recovered paper is an essential raw material for us, and we want to safeguard the availability and quality of it by co-operating with communities and wastepaper companies.
