As of 1 January 2016 UPM has been a member of UN Global Compact LEAD. UPM is the first forest industry company and also the first Finnish company ever having received an invitation to LEAD. Global Compact LEAD is a unique leadership platform within the United Nations Global Compact that strongly promotes the integration of sustainability into business strategies. At the moment the 50 most sustainably advanced companies across geographical regions and industry sectors have been invited to LEAD. The total number of member companies at UN Global Compact is approximately 8000.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) includes sustainability leaders from each industry on a global and regional level, respectively.
The annual review of the DJSI is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as climate change mitigation, supply chain standards, labour practices, corporate governance and risk management.
UPM has been listed as the forest and paper industry leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index (DJSI) for 2016-2017 for the fifth time in a row. Read more on UPM Press Release 8th September 2016.
The Nordic Bioeconomy Panel under The Nordic Council of Ministers has chosen UPM BioVerno and GrowDex® in the Nordic bioeconomy - 25 cases for sustainable change catalogue. UPM BioVerno is a renewable diesel made of crude tall oil, a wood residue from pulp production. GrowDex® is a wood-based nanocellulose hydrogel developed for the needs of the pharmaceutical industry. In November 2016 UPM received the PPI Bio Strategy Award 2016 for its biofuels business in Brussels, Belgium.The PPI Awards are the only global awards that are dedicated to recognizing the achievements of companies, mills and individuals in the pulp and paper sector.The judges were looking for a company that has grabbed the opportunity in using wood, biomass or waste for the creation of bioenergy, biofuels and other non-core products signifying an entrance into the bioeconomy, and has demonstrated that the strategy impacts financial performance. A great example case of this is of course UPM's advanced biofuels production in the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery in Finland.

In early 2015, UPM Biofuels was awarded the Commercial Scale Plant of the year in the WBM Bio Business 2015 competition. The award was received thanks to the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery in Finland, which started commercial production in January.
In 2014 UPM Biofuels received the European Union’s Sustainable Energy Europe Award 2014 in the “Travelling” category for its renewable crude tall oil-based UPM BioVerno diesel in Brussels, Belgium. The Sustainable Energy Europe Awards reward and promote Europe’s best sustainable energy projects in the fields of energy efficiency, renewables and clean transport.
In January 2017 UPM received the Silver Class distinction in RobecoSAM's annual Sustainability Yearbook 2017 for its excellent sustainability performance. UPM was one of the top-scoring company in its industry sector.
The Sustainability Yearbook lists the world’s sustainability leaders and ranks companies as gold, silver or bronze class on the basis of their performance in RobecoSAM’s annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). The CSA is an analysis of economic, environmental and social performance of the world’s leading companies, assessing issues covering climate change strategies, supply chain standards, labour practices, corporate governance and risk management.

In December 2016 the CDP Forest Program recognised UPM with a global leadership position in the 2016 Forest A List for timber and timber based products. According to Katie McCoy, head of forests at CDP, the A-listed companies are responding to market demand for environmental accountability and at the same time are making progress towards achieving deforestation-free supply chains.
The CDP's report examines what steps companies are taking to protect their supply chains and bottom-lines against deforestation-related risks. It has been produced at the request of 365 investors with US$22 trillion in assets by CDP, who request data from large corporations on their efforts to mitigate deforestation risks.

In October 2016 UPM was included in the CDP Climate A List. CDP climate change program recognises annually the top performing companies for their climate actions and transparent climate reporting. Top scores indicate a high level of transparency in the disclosure of company’s climate change-related information, such as data regarding carbon emissions and the use of energy.
The CDP's annual global climate change report, along with the climate scores of all companies publicly taking part in CDP's climate change program this year, is available on CDP's website.

CDP's Water Program identifies annually companies that understand that the sustainable management of water is a business imperative and take actions to improve their water security.
In 2016 about 1250 companies were disclosing their water information on this program. UPM's response was benchmarked against companies in our sector with a score A-, which is a leadership position in CDP's ranking. According to CDP, UPM has implemented a range of best practice actions to manage water and mitigate water risk, both in its own operations and beyond them.

UPM is integrated to Euronext Vigeo Europe 120 Index in 2015. The index distinguishes the 120 companies in Europe with the most advanced corporate responsibility performance. Companies included in this index have achieved the highest scores, as determined by the review of up to 330 indicators, assessed by Vigeo within 38 sustainability drivers.To read more, go to Vigeo web page.
In 2013, UPM was selected for inclusion in the United Nations Global Compact 100 – a new global stock index that combines corporate sustainability and baseline financial performance.
100 companies are selected for the index based on their adherence to the Global Compact’s ten principles as well as evidence of executive leadership commitment and consistent baseline profitability.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recognised UPM for its exemplary forest management practices in June 2015. The recognition was conferred by the Forestry General Direction of Uruguay as part of a National Workshop titled “Methodological Transfer of Exemplary Cases of Sustainable Forest Management”.Read more on the press release on 11 June 2015.
In 2012, UPM was awarded the EU Ecolabel Communication Award in the Producer/Retailer category. The EU Ecolabel is the EU’s official indication of the most environmentally responsible products.
The STOXX Global ESG Leaders Index offers a representation of the leading global companies in terms of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria, based on indicators provided by Sustainalytics. UPM has been included in the index since its launch in 2011.
UPM was recognised as the “Most Innovative Company” at the 2012 Ethical Corporation Awards held in London. UPM was highlighted for its Eco Design approach and overall sustainable thinking.
The Ethical Corporation Awards recognises companies and individuals who have made significant advances in the field of corporate responsibility. Previous winners have included Unilever, L’Oreal and the Rainforest Alliance. UPM was shortlisted alongside Acelor Mittal, McDonalds Europe and CottonConnect.
The UPM Shotton paper mill in north Wales was presented the Award for Environmental Strategy of the Year for a Mill at the annual PPI Awards held in Brussels in November 2012. The award was given in recognition of UPM Shotton going the extra mile and implementing innovative environmental solutions. The judges were looking for a showcase mill that takes all the elements of responsibility into consideration, from the sourcing of raw material, minimising impacts, and water energy and resource efficiency.
Organised by RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry, the PPI Awards honour leadership, vision, innovation and strategic accomplishments within the pulp and paper industry.
UPM was one of seven paper producers to receive an award from the WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) in the category of “Transparency” during the 2012 WWF Environmental Paper Awards.
The award recognises UPM’s efforts in providing public information on the environmental footprint of the majority of its paper products in “Check your paper”: a global benchmarking database of eco-rated papers that promotes the responsible supply chain of paper products.
Transparency and continuous improvement of our environmental performance are key drivers for us. One good channel for us to report our performance is the Environmental Paper Company Index (EPCI) of The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Published biannually, this Index promotes open and ever improving environmental performance of paper and pulp manufacturing companies. In year 2015 WWF invited 80 sector leaders in the Index and evaluated their environmental policies and targets, as well as their environmental performance with regard to overall production of news, graphic, packaging and tissue papers and pulp. According to the EPCI, published on 4th November, UPM has improved its performance in many ways.
