Compliance with laws and regulations

Acting in compliance with laws and regulations, such as REACH or certification of products for food or toys, are just a starting point for us. We offer our paper customers a tool, the UPM Product Safety Profile, which provides them with all relevant product safety information.

REACH

EU Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) is the European chemicals legislation that came into force in June 2007. REACH aims to promote sustainable development by improving the protection of human health and environment.

UPM meets all the REACH requirements and welcomes REACH as a positive development in streamlining EU chemical legislation.

UPM is mainly an end-user of chemicals and we have made sure that all our chemical suppliers are aware of the REACH requirements.

UPM Biofuels products and by-products and intermediates of chemical pulping have been registered by UPM as required by REACH legislation.

Food contact and toy safety certificates

When a product will be directly used as a toy or will be in contact with food or a toy, there are strict regulations that must be fulfilled. The regulations may differ geographically, but the best known and most widely referenced regulations are the FDA (FDA regulations, 21 CFR, parts 170–189, USA) and BfR (BfR recommendation no XXXVI, Germany) regulations, which set a tight testing framework for the products in terms of, for example, the migration of chemical substances and heavy metal content.

All UPM products intended to be in contact with food or toys or to be used as a raw material for toys are carefully tested in independent accredited laboratories. The third-party-verified product safety level is one way to guarantee that the UPM products used as packaging materials, particularly those used as food and toy packaging materials, meet all relevant demands and regulations on consumer and food safety.

Product-specific food contact and/or toy certificates are available upon request. Check also our Certificate Finder.

Biodegradability and compostability

All UPM pulp and paper products are naturally biodegradable as well as compostable. As no hazardous chemicals are used as raw materials in the manufacture of our products, they provide no toxic substances when biodegrading .

Product Safety Profile for paper products (MSDS functionality)

For our paper customers we offer a unique tool, the UPM Product Safety Profile, which gathers all relevant product safety information into one, concise form.

UPM Product Safety Profiles offer detailed information on the safety of our paper products, management systems in place and certificates related to product safety issues. Product Safety Profiles are available for each paper machine line. Product composition offers average figures of all products produced on the paper machine line in question. The profiles are available on request from UPM customer service teams and through UPM's Certificate Finder.
