Product safety

Product safety is paramount to UPM. Therefore, we are continuously developing our raw material supply and manufacturing processes.
Third-party verified product safety systems are one way to guarantee that the UPM products that are used as packaging material, especially food and toy packaging materials, meet all relevant demands and regulations on consumer and food safety.
Product safety systems usually cover the whole manufacturing process from raw material procurement and food and toy packaging material production to the delivery of end products. In addition, to increase the safety of our paper products even further, we launched the UPM Restricted Chemical Substance List in 2010 to which all our suppliers are committed.
All UPM paper products are manufactured from elementary chlorine free (ECF) and total chlorine free (TCF) pulps.
They also fulfil the requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive 94/62/EC and its amendment Directive 2004/12/EC, as well as the RoHS directive 2001/95/EC concerning the heavy metal content.
Responsible chemical use and UPM's Restricted Chemical Substance List
Ensuring product safety starts with purchasing chemicals. Therefore, UPM launched the UPM Restricted Chemical Substance List (UPM RSL) to guarantee that our chemical suppliers are compliant with UPM's high sustainability standards and to ensure that our products are safe and clean.
UPM’s Restricted Chemical Substance List has been part of the responsible sourcing procedures since 2010.
