Responsibility is about values, words and - above all - actions

To ensure environmentally responsible operations throughout the company, UPM has established corporate responsibility in key areas with respective principles and targets. The five key environmental areas are: products, climate, water, forests and waste.

UPM’s target is to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations and products throughout the lifecycle; from raw material sourcing, production, delivery and product use, to the recycling and reuse of the products.

Complying with best environmental practices and legislation

Handling environmental matters is an integral part of day-to-day management and operation at UPM. UPM’s environmental work is based on the principle of continuous improvement.

This is supported by the implementation of certified management systems. The management systems are assessed regularly by means of external and internal audits. All UPM mills are covered by ISO 14001 environmental systems.

Furthermore, UPM was the first company in the pulp and paper industry to achieve multinational corporate registration to EMAS, the EU’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme.
