UPM participates in and is reviewed by several indices that assess companies' economic, environmental and social performance.
The Nordic carbon disclosure leadership index
In 2011, for the third consecutive year, UPM was featured in Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) Nordic Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index for its approach to the disclosure of climate change information.
This index, a key component of CDP’s annual Nordic 260 report, highlights the companies within the Nordic stock exchanges that have displayed the most professional approach to corporate governance regarding climate change information disclosure practices.
The companies are scored on their climate change disclosure focusing on greenhouse gas emissions, emission reduction targets and how they manage risks and opportunities associated with climate change.
The forest footprint disclosure project
Since 2010, UPM has participated in the Forest Footprint Disclosure (FFD) Project. The FFD Project focuses on risks relating to deforestation, and it requests associated information on company policy and management of operations, specifically regarding forestry.
Companies participating in this project are asked to disclose what impact their operations and supply chains have on forests across the globe, and what is being done to manage those impacts responsibly.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) includes sustainability leaders from each industry on a global and regional level respectively.
The annual review of the DJSI is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as climate change mitigation, supply chain standards, labour practices, corporate governance and risk management.
In 2011, UPM received the highest score of the Forestry & Paper Sector for the Environmental Dimension in the DJSI evaluation, though UPM is currently not listed in the DJSI index.
The Storebrand Best in Class recognition
In March 2011, the Norwegian Storebrand group awarded UPM the Best in Class status for prominent environmental, social and governance performance. Storebrand Group is a leading company in the Nordic markets for pensions, life and health insurance, banking and asset management.
In the accreditations, Storebrand underlined UPM’s long-term commitment to improving its environmental performance. For example, Storebrand highlighted UPM’s global biodiversity programme and the company’s consistent work to reduce CO2 emissions and to increase the share of ecolabelled product offerings.
