ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION

UPM’s energy portfolio is dominated by CO2-neutral energy sources. UPM's total electricity producing capacity is almost 3000 MW. In 2011 UPM's electricity production totalled over 14 TWh out of which 79% was CO2 emission free.

UPM’s diversified and cost competitive electricity production capacity consists of hydropower, nuclear power, conventional condensing power and biomass-based combined heat and power (CHP).

UPM has nine hydropower plants in Finland and several small scale hydropower units at paper mill sites in Finland, Germany and Austria.

UPM has over 20 mill site power plants. Annually about 67% of the fuels used at the mill site power plants are derived from renewable sources.

In addition, via its associated company Pohjolan Voima Oy (PVO), UPM holds shares in hydro, nuclear and condensing power, and hydropower via Kemijoki Oy.
