By the lake Saimaa in Lappeenranta, Finland, stands a new site that looks like a small oil refinery. It is a Finnish commercial scale biorefinery – one of a kind. A tank truck from the adjacent UPM pulp mill delivers crude tall oil, a residue of pulp production, as a feedstock to the biorefinery. Crude tall oil, originating from the resin of wood, is refined into renewable diesel. The novel biofuel, called UPM BioVerno, reduces carbon dioxide emissions significantly.
