UPM Energy is a market-driven business area covering electricity production and energy market operations.

The Energy business area manages UPM's versatile electricity portfolio of hydro, nuclear and condensing power generation, excluding those integrated into the pulp and paper mills. The Energy business area's total electricity generating capacity is about 1,714 MW. The UPM Energy team has a high level of expertise in energy biomass management.

Over the past few years, UPM has consistently increased its capabilities in multi-commodity energy trading. The cross-functional trading team operates in the Nordic and Central European energy markets. In-house energy market insights give efficient support for energy procurement and hedging.

UPM Energy sells the electricity it generates to the markets. It is also responsible for the Group’s electricity distribution.

UPM aims to grow in the Nordic and European CO2 emission-free energy market by expanding in these businesses and by leveraging cost competitive energy sources.

UPM is actively developing new energy generation projects to capture business opportunities through investments, joint ventures and acquisitions.
