(UPM, Helsinki, 15 May 2012) – The central meeting place for World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 event – the pavilion made from Finnish wood – has opened last weekend. The building showcases wood and composites products made by UPM and is a key part of the official programme for the design year. The Pavilion is open for public until mid-September.The Pavilion, 470 m2 in size, is located at a lot between Design Museum and Museum of Finnish Architecture, Helsinki. The beams and columns of the building are box structures with cores made from structural timber and outer panels from plywood. The floor and walls are made from pine. On the yard there are composite terraces.- Wood as a material is versatile, modern – the material of the future. In the core of our Biofore strategy is processing of wood bio mass in various ways. The Pavilion is a combination of world-class design, skillful craftsmanship and our wood and composite products, says Mr Jussi Pesonen, CEO, UPM.The contemporary building is the heart of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 during summer months. The Pavilion offers free programme for all visitors from Tuesday to Sunday at 11.00-21.00.
