Available in the European market, the new adhesive ensures that labels stay in place without discoloring the fabric or leaving residue when removed.

RP38 TXL keeps labels securely in place for applications such as clothing and product labeling, and protects merchandise by ensuring that there are no markings or discolorations from the label. UPM Biofuels joins Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials2016-12-07T11:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 7 December 2016 at 13:00 EET) - UPM has become member of RSB, the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials. RSB is a global standard and certification scheme for sustainable production of biomaterials and biofuels. It is also an independent multi-stakeholder coalition, which works to support the sustainability of biomaterials.

RSB is considered one of the strongest sustainability schemes, verifying that biomaterials are ethical, sustainable, and credibly sourced. It is also one of the EU approved voluntary schemes for biofuels to show compliance with sustainability requirements set for the production of biofuels in the EU's Renewable Energy Directive. UPM sees great potential in RSB and is keen to be part of the future development of the scheme.

"RSB Membership is a step forward for UPM Biofuels to further engage sustainability. We are committed to strengthening our performance in sustainability and promoting standards that provide tools and methods to bring it into action," says Sari Mannonen, Head of UPM Biofuels.

RSB membership is a natural next step for UPM's previous work with the certification scheme. Together with WWF Finland, UPM has conducted a feasibility study on RSB certification for UPM's biofuel production. It concluded that RSB is a feasible certification system for UPM BioVerno which is based on the use of our own industry's residue, crude tall oil.

UPM Biofuels is also a member of ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), another strong sustainability scheme for biomaterials and biofuels.

Innovative biofuels from Finland

UPM's renewable diesel, known as UPM BioVerno, is an innovation that reduces fuel's life cycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% and tailpipe emissions significantly when compared with fossil fuels. This high quality biofuel is produced from a residue of the pulp industry, crude tall oil. UPM BioVerno is an ideal fuel for all diesel-powered vehicles.

UPM started production of wood-based renewable diesel in the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery in January 2015. The production capacity of the biorefinery is 120 million litres of renewable diesel annually. All products of the biorefinery are certified under the ISCC or Finnish national sustainability scheme. Great results from testing UPM's wood-based diesel in buses 2016-11-29T09:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 29 November 2016, 11.00 EET) - UPM has successfully tested Finnish wood-based diesel fuel both in laboratory conditions as well as in traffic. The tests clearly demonstrated that UPM's renewable diesel, UPM BioVerno, works just like the best diesel fuels.

The laboratory tests of renewable UPM BioVerno diesel were conducted in the VTT Technical Research Centre (VTT) and field tests in Helsinki region bus traffic together with Helsinki Region Transport (HSL). The year-long bus field tests' measurements were done by VTT, and the tests were also supported by Transdev Finland Oy, Volvo and St1.

The first laboratory tests were done with Euro III Class buses, which are still widely used on Finnish roads even today. UPM BioVerno diesel produced clearly lower emissions than fossil diesel. Compared to other advanced fuels, the emissions of UPM BioVerno diesel were at least as low as theirs.

"The use of UPM BioVerno diesel in the current bus fleet instead of fossil diesel would lower emissions from public transport significantly. This is good news as this Finnish wood-based fuel could immediately - and positively - affect the air quality in the Helsinki region," says Sari Mannonen, Vice President of UPM Biofuels.

UPM BioVerno diesel worked well in year-long bus field tests

The field tests with buses were conducted by Transdev Finland on a regular bus route between the city of Kerava and Helsinki using four identical Volvo Euro VI Class buses that have low emissions and efficient engines. The test runs were done using 20%, 50% and 100% UPM BioVerno diesel and St1 was the fuel logistics provider in the tests.

According to test results, UPM BioVerno diesel is working very well in all blending ratios - just like the best diesel fuels - and fuel consumption was exactly the same. Together the four buses travelled some 400,000 km without any fuel-related incidents.

The Euro VI Class buses are equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts which are capable of reducing emissions to a negligible level, so the tests did not show any significant differences in emissions between various fuels. In Euro VI Class engines the fuel affects the emissions mainly indirectly: high quality fuel, such as UPM BioVerno, guarantees that the exhaust cleaning systems operate effectively even after driving significant mileage.

"We are happy with the test results - they show that UPM BioVerno could fully replace fossil diesel in current bus traffic. Biofuels have a significant role in our company's targets, as we are aiming for carbon-free public transportation in the Helsinki region," says Reijo Mäkinen, head of the Traffic Services department in HSL.

The bus field tests were part of a larger BioPilot project coordinated by VTT. The goal of the project was to encourage companies to commercialise renewable energy solutions in traffic.

"Advanced biofuels are a tested, well-functioning solution and a great opportunity for Finland. They could be our fast track to low emission traffic as they could be taken into use immediately and clearly cut down the emissions," says Research Professor Nils-Olof Nylund from VTT.

HSL and VTT have started the BioSata project, which is a natural continuum for the BioPilot project which has now ended. The new project is proceeding to application phase and its target is to raise the level of biofuels used in HSL bus traffic up to 70-90% before the end of this decade.

Innovative renewable diesel from Finland

UPM's renewable diesel, known as UPM BioVerno, is an innovation that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% and tailpipe emissions significantly when compared with fossil fuels. This high quality biofuel is produced from a residue of the pulp industry, crude tall oil. UPM Raflatac's new conformable film combines the best features of PP and PE in a single material2016-11-25T07:00:00Z
(UPM Raflatac, Tampere, 25 November 2016 at 09:00 EET) - UPM Raflatac is launching Raflex PRO, an advanced new flexible film offering high transparency for contoured and shaped containers. This versatile material joins the Raflex family of conformable films alongside Raflex MDO, a high-performance and eco-designed solution for squeezable containers that have previously been reliant on polyethylene (PE) labeling materials.

Traditionally there have been two film labeling options: PE offering flexibility for squeezable bottles, and polypropylene (PP) providing transparency and gloss for rigid containers. While both films provide significant advantages over paper label faces, their very different properties often mean a compromise is needed. Raflex films have been developed to offer the benefits of both films in a single material, providing both flexibility and transparency for a variety of containers.

For applications where PP would be too rigid, Raflex PRO gives a high-quality, no-label look, combining an ultra-clear finish with good conformability on contoured and semi-squeezable containers. It is ideal for home and personal care, food, and beverage applications, offering chemical resistance and stability even in challenging conditions. Raflex PRO is just as thin and light as PP and supports good print results even without a topcoat.

Find out more about the Raflex family of conformable films.

High-resolution photos of can be downloaded at UPM image gallery.

For further information please contact:
Päivi Knihti, Segment Manager - Films, UPM Raflatac, EMEIA tel. +358 2041 68 395

UPM Raflatac
UPM Raflatac is one of the world's leading producers of self-adhesive label materials. UPM Biofuels wins Pulp and Paper Industry's Bio Strategy Award 20162016-11-22T12:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 22 November at 14:00 EET) - UPM has received the PPI Bio Strategy Award 2016 for its biofuels business in Brussels, Belgium. The PPI Awards are the only global awards that are dedicated to recognizing the achievements of companies, mills and individuals in the pulp and paper sector.

The judges were looking for a company that has grabbed the opportunity in using wood, biomass or waste for the creation of bioenergy, biofuels and other non-core products signifying an entrance into the bioeconomy, and has demonstrated that the strategy impacts financial performance. A great example case of this is of course UPM's advanced biofuels production in the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery in Finland.

"We are very pleased and honoured to receive this recognition. We are convinced that the biofuels business makes sense in so many ways, as it uses residues for raw material, makes us less dependent on fossil oil, and is a fast track for reducing greenhouse gas and tailpipe emissions from transportation," says Sari Mannonen, Head of UPM Biofuels. "Last but not least we have been able to demonstrate that this is not only sustainable but also good business."

PPI Awards ceremony in Brussels - Sari Mannonen, Head of UPM Biofuels (fourth from left), accepted UPM's awards.

Excellence in the global pulp and paper industry was celebrated for the 8th year in a row at the PPI Awards on 21 November, held in conjunction with the CEPI European Paper Week in Brussels. UPM Otepää plywood mill rises to world class - mill expansion and the new bio boiler plant inaugurated 2016-11-11T11:30:00Z
(UPM Plywood, Lahti, Finland, 11 November 2016 at 13:30 EET) - The expansion of UPM Otepää plywood mill, started in the spring of 2015 along with the building of the new bio boiler plant, has been completed and will be inaugurated today. The expansion increases the mill's production capacity to 90,000 cubic meters per year. The new bio boiler plant, in turn, enhances the mill's material efficiency and reduces fossil carbon dioxide emissions by 85%. The investments total to approximately EUR 40 million.

"The investments now completed, take Otepää mill to the world-class of plywood mills. Consequent to the increased production capacity, the mill will be able to better respond to the growing demand for high-quality plywood products in our key customer industries in construction, transport equipment industry and LNG shipbuilding, "says Mika Sillanpää, Executive Vice President of UPM Plywood.

During the expansion, the mill was installed with the latest technology veneer peeling line and drying line, added veneer jointing and composing capacity and the new gluing and pressing lines. In addition, log sorting and soaking capacity was increased to meet growing production volumes. The new 18 MW bio boiler plant produces all of the mill's thermal energy using the production by-products as fuel. Therefore, all of Otepää mill's wood raw material is used either in plywood production, as raw material to other products or in energy production.

Founded in 2000, Otepää mill is the largest plywood mill in Estonia. It manufactures uncoated and coated birch plywood mainly for construction, vehicle floors and LNG carriers. 95% of the plant's production is exported, mainly to Central Europe. Along with the completion of the expansion, Otepää plywood mill's personnel has grown by about forty to 240 people. The mill is one of the biggest industrial employers in the Valgamaa County in Estonia.

For further information please contact:
Mika Kekki, Vice President, Production, UPM Plywood, tel. +358 40 545 5803, mika.kekki [at] upm.com
Ando Jukk, Mill Director, UPM Otepää, tel. +372 51 434 70, ando.jukk [at] upm.com

UPM Plywood
UPM Plywood manufactures high-quality WISA® plywood and veneer products mainly for construction and transport industries and the new thermo-formable UPM Grada® wood material for the form pressing industry. UPM and Yara to co-develop recycled fertilisers2016-11-10T08:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 10 November 2016 at 10:00 EET) - Raki2, a nutrient recycling programme from the Finnish Ministry of the Environment, has granted funding for a joint project established by UPM together with the fertiliser and crop nutrition expert Yara Suomi Oy to develop nutrient recycling. Funding has been granted for the years 2017-2018.

The efficiency of recycled fertilisers and the need for their supplementation by mineral fertilisers are studied in the field trials at Kotkaniemi Research Station.

"The project by UPM and Yara Suomi is a concrete initiative to develop and test fertilisers with clear-cut targets", says Senior Officer Anni Karhunen from the Ministry of the Environment.
"I am particularly happy that, for the first time, someone is really looking into the possibilities of reusing nutrients in the side streams of the forest industry. The projects that were chosen for the Raki funding once again include many different companies, so I am confident it will also lead to new business development", she continues.

"The joint project by UPM and Yara concentrates on the possibilities for the agricultural reuse of nutrients retrieved from the sludge originating from the pulp and paper mill's effluent treatment plants and the ash from the incineration process", says Esa Laurinsilta, Director of Strategic Partnerships at UPM.

"Together with UPM's R&D team, we are developing a nutrient solution that contains the correct ratio of recycled and mineral nutrients", says Timo Räsänen, Commercial Director at Yara Suomi. The research and development is carried out in UPM's Research Centre in Lappeenranta and Yara's Kotkaniemi Research Station in Vihti. "Recycled fertilisers do not automatically contain the correct amount of nutrients, so they need to be supplemented by mineral fertilisers that the plants can utilise without difficulties. This ensures that all nutrients move to the plants during the growing season and do not remain in the fields to then be washed up to waterways", Timo Räsänen continues.

"The two companies have a shared goal to develop an efficient, industrial-scale nutrient solution including recycled fertiliser that can be used to help produce clean domestic food profitably and with minimum environmental emissions. The joint project is a great example of circular economy, resource efficiency and industrial collaboration", conclude Laurinsilta and Räsänen.

One of the targets of the Finnish Government Programme is to increase the profitability of food production without compromising environmental protection and to make Finland a model of nutrient recycling. The second phase of the Raki programme was launched as part of Prime Minister Sipilä's Government's key project Breakthrough of a circular economy, getting waters into good condition, which aims to also utilise circular economy to promote the good ecological state of the Baltic Sea and to improve nutrient recycling.

Finding new methods for reusing sludge is part of the side-streams research programme at UPM's R&D. The results are also used in UPM's "Zero Solid Waste" initiative.
