Combining the best of functionality, efficiency and sustainability: Introducing PE 65, UPM Raflatac's thinnest squeezable film2018-08-29T14:00:00Z
(UPM Raflatac, Mills River, NC, USA, August 29, 2018 at 17:00 EET) - As part of its commitment to labeling a smarter future, UPM Raflatac is pleased to announce the launch of its new PE 65 film label stock range in the Americas market, the company's thinnest squeezable films to-date and the thinnest PE label produced for the home and personal care market.

These thinner versions of UPM Raflatac's standard PE 85 films offer the same excellent conformability and squeezability and can create a seamless, no-edge look on bottles. Combined with their resistance to water, oils and chemicals, new clear and white PE 65 film constructions are a sustainable alternative for conformable and squeezable containers and tubes. These thin films do not sacrifice performance, as they are at the top of the squeezability scale.

Not only do labels printed with PE 65 flex with the packaging and maintain their good looks, their thinner overall construction helps printers, converters and brands run a more efficient operation. PE 65's thinner caliper means more labels per roll and longer roll lengths, resulting in fewer roll changes and less down time. These 65 micron (2.6 mil) PE film label materials also reduce transportation and packaging waste at multiple stages in the operational process.

Choosing ecodesigned products like PE 65 materials can also help reduce the environmental impact of labels. According to a UPM Raflatac Life Cycle Assessment study performed in accordance with internationally recognized ISO 14040/44 standards, by switching from PE 85 to PE 65, companies can see significant reductions in energy use (15%), greenhouse gas emissions (14%) and water consumption (13%).

"UPM Raflatac's new PE 65 film label materials are ideal for any brand looking to combine the ultimate in performance with increased production efficiency and a sustainable design," says Daryl Northcott, Director, Films Business, Americas, UPM Raflatac. "Our company continuously strives to be the pressure-sensitive label industry's sustainability leader and partner of choice, and our new PE 65 films are helping us build a more sustainable world, one label at a time."

Learn more about UPM Raflatac's new PE 65 film materials, their thinnest squeezable film »

Click here to download a hi-res image of new PE 65 film materials »

For further information please contact:

Scott Sowers
Senior Communications Specialist, UPM Raflatac
Mon-Fri 8.00-17.00 ET
tel. +1 828-275-7261
scott.sowers@upmraflatac.com

UPM Raflatac
UPM Raflatac is labeling a smarter future by developing innovative and sustainable labeling solutions complemented with world-class service. There are 31 schools participating in the trips and a total of approximately 1,200 students are expected to attend.

The forest trips will be organised in cooperation with the Finnish Forest Association and the Finnish 4H Organisation in the cities where UPM mills are situated in Finland, Kouvola, Lappeenranta, Pietarsaari and Rauma.

"We want to offer children a positive forest experience to help building a versatile and life-long forestry relationship. Forest trips support children's learning and increase understanding of forestry," says Inka Musta, Environmental Manager of UPM Wood Sourcing and Forestry. "Forests and wood products are part of our daily life. We want to increase the appreciation for forests and wood as a renewable and recyclable raw material," Musta continues.

In 2017, UPM organised similar forest trips for the first time. The students enjoyed the events, and the most memorable moments consisted of things such as watching the water flowing in a creek, planting plants and having a picnic lunch by the fire. Learning new was interesting and exciting. Planting trees, assessing the age of a tree, observing the various stages of forest, and how wood is present in many different everyday products, were new to many.

"These excursions are a great way to implement a new curriculum that encourages teaching outside the classroom. Both teachers and students praise forestry education in an authentic environment with the guidance of experts," says Suvi Pessala of the Finnish Forest Association. "More similar excursions are requested as it is know that experimenting and doing is the best way to learn. Forest professionals are also interested in getting to know students' thoughts about the forest."

Forest trips are part of UPM's Biofore Share and Care programme. The programme focuses on projects that are relevant to both UPM's business and responsibility goals. The focus areas are: Reading & Learning, Engaging with communities, Responsible water use and Boosting bioinnovations.

For further information please contact:
Environmental Manager Inka Musta, UPM Wood Sourcing and forestry, tel. +358 40 634 9900
Youth communications specialist Suvi Pessala, Finnish Forest Association, tel. +358 45 657 5442

UPM, Media Relations
Mon-Fri 9:00-16:00 EET
tel. +358 40 588 3284
media@upm.com

UPM
UPM leads the forest-based bioindustry into a sustainable, innovation-driven and exciting future across six business areas: UPM Biorefining, UPM Energy, UPM Raflatac, UPM Specialty Papers, UPM Communication Papers and UPM Plywood. another successful quarter of earnings growth. Customer demand for our products continued to be strong and we succeeded in increasing prices in most of our businesses also during the quarter. This enabled us to expand our margins and recover the impact of clearly higher input costs.

We carried out several significant scheduled maintenance shutdowns during the quarter, which held back our operating profit by approximately EUR 90 million. However, earlier challenges in wood harvesting and logistics were solved and no longer impacted our performance.

Our sales grew by 5% and our comparable EBIT increased by 24% to EUR 334 million. Operating cash flow was strong at EUR 329 million. UPM paid a dividend of EUR 613 million and net debt was EUR 401 million at the end of the quarter.

UPM Biorefining increased its earnings clearly. Customer demand was strong for pulp, biofuels and sawn timber, and sales prices increased. Scheduled maintenance shutdowns were carried out at the Fray Bentos and Kaukas pulp mills and at the Lappeenranta biorefinery. During the Kaukas shutdown, the pulp mill expansion was completed, providing 30,000 tons of additional pulp capacity.

UPM Communication Papers grew both its sales and earnings in tight markets. The business area achieved high operational efficiency and increased prices. UPM Raflatac performed well and managed to resume earnings growth after a challenging Q1. UPM Plywood had a steady performance in a good market situation.

UPM Energy improved earnings due to higher electricity prices and volumes. Electricity generation was held back by the annual maintenance shutdown at Olkiluoto power plant and weakened hydropower availability during the quarter.

UPM Specialty Papers enjoyed good market demand and increased prices, but was not able to fully offset the higher pulp costs.

We look to the future with confidence. In the second half of the year we have every opportunity to respond to customer demand with growing deliveries. Our ongoing focused growth projects enable us to develop our market position while maintaining and growing our earnings. During the quarter we announced new focused growth investments in Germany and in China in the attractive release liner business.

Our transformative prospects provide us with unique and exciting opportunities for significant long-term earnings growth. In Uruguay, the second preparation phase for the potential new world-class pulp mill is proceeding well. In attractive biomolecular businesses we continue to prepare for the potential first industrial-scale biochemical refinery in Germany and study the potential biofuels scale up in Finland.

In 2009, we redefined UPM as the Biofore Company, creating a new, future-oriented industry category characterized by efficiency, innovation and sustainability. This positioning gave a name to our transformation, energizing both UPMers as well as our stakeholders. We continue to be inspired by the limitless opportunities of bioeconomy. We are committed to delivering renewable and responsible solutions and innovating for a future beyond fossils."

Outlook 2018

UPM's comparable EBIT is expected to continue growing in 2018 compared with 2017. H2 2018 comparable EBIT is expected to be significantly higher compared with H1 2018.

The fundamentals for UPM businesses in 2018 are favourable. Sales price increases in 2018 are expected to outweigh the increase in variable cost, compared with 2017.

H1 2018 results were impacted by four significant maintenance shutdowns and weather-related wood harvesting limitations. H2 2018 is scheduled to have one significant maintenance shutdown.

Webcast and press conference

UPM's President and CEO Jussi Pesonen will present the financial results in a webcast and a conference call for analysts and investors, held in English language, today at 13:15 EET.

Later in the afternoon, Jussi Pesonen will present the results in a press conference held in Finnish language at the UPM Group Head Office (The Biofore House) in Helsinki, Alvar Aallon katu 1, at 14:30 EET.

Webcast and conference call details:

The conference call can be participated in either by dialling a number in the list below or following the webcast online at www.upm.com or through this link.

Only participants who wish to ask questions in the conference call need to dial in. Combining the best of functionality, efficiency and sustainability: Introducing PE 65, UPM Raflatac's thinnest squeezable film2018-07-12T10:00:00Z
(UPM Raflatac, Helsinki, 12 July 2018 at 10:00 EET) - As part of its commitment to labeling a smarter future, UPM Raflatac is pleased to announce the launch of its new PE 65 film label stock range in the EMEIA market, the company's thinnest squeezable films to-date and the thinnest PE label produced for the home and personal care market.

Not only do labels printed with PE 65 flex with the packaging and maintain their good looks, their thinner overall construction helps printers, converters and end-users run a more efficient operation. PE 65's thinner caliper means more labels per roll and longer roll lengths, resulting in fewer roll changes and less down time. These 65 micron PE film label materials also reduce transportation and packaging waste at multiple stages in the operational process.

"UPM Raflatac's new PE 65 film label materials are ideal for any brand looking to combine the ultimate in performance with increased production efficiency and a sustainable design," says Jan Hasselblatt, Director, Business Development, Home and Personal Care, UPM Raflatac.

Jan Hasselblatt, Director, Business Development, Home and Personal Care, UPM Raflatac, tel. +358 94 273 5744

UPM, Media Relations
Mon-Fri 9.00-16.00 EET
tel. +358 40 588 3284
media@upm.com

UPM Raflatac
UPM Raflatac is labeling a smarter future by developing innovative and sustainable labeling solutions complemented with world-class service. Combining the best of functionality, efficiency and sustainability: Introducing PE 65, UPM Raflatac's thinnest squeezable film2018-07-12T07:00:00Z

"UPM Raflatac's new PE 65 film label materials are ideal for any brand looking to combine the ultimate in performance with increased production efficiency and a sustainable design," says Jan Hasselblatt, Director, Business Development, Home and Personal Care, UPM Raflatac.

Jan Hasselblatt, Director, Business Development, Home and Personal Care, UPM Raflatac, tel. +358 94 273 5744

UPM, Media Relations
Mon-Fri 9.00-16.00 EET
tel. +358 40 588 3284
media@upm.com

UPM Raflatac
UPM Raflatac is labeling a smarter future by developing innovative and sustainable labeling solutions complemented with world-class service. Societal impacts have a visible role in UPM's EMAS reporting 2018-07-06T10:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 6 July 2018, 10:00 EET) - UPM has today published the EMAS (EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) statements of its pulp and paper mills. The statements are more extensive than ever. Over the years, the company has reported on environmental impacts at its pulp and paper mills in Europe, China and Uruguay. Now the reports also provide a thorough analysis of the company's societal impact at a local level.

According to Gabriele Wende, Director, Reporting and Product Stewardship, UPM, people are interested in companies' impact on society in addition to the environmental matters. "Mills are a part of local people's everyday lives, so what happens within the company is not insignificant by any means. That's why we want to provide verified and concrete information, e.g. on our contribution to employment, tax income and purchasing power, as well as co-operation with the communities. The information also has to be easily accessible," Wende says.

"UPM's initiative to open the scope of its environmental reporting to include social indicators shows the strong commitment of the company to transparency, a value shared by all EMAS organisations," says Kestutis Sadauskas, Director for the Green Economy at the European Commission's Directorate General for the Environment.
"The performance of the company is verified by an independent EMAS verifier, providing the public and other stakeholders with reliable information on its contribution to sustainable development. We would encourage other companies to move in this direction too", he says.

A mathematical model of effects on consumption

Extended EMAS reporting was improved first time this year using a mathematical calculation model developed by the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy. The model was used to estimate indirect jobs and effects on consumption created by the company's production units in Finland.
Research Director Jyrki Ali-Yrkkö from Etlatieto Oy says, that calculations can be made both regionally and nationally.
"The model is based on input-output statistics from Statistics Finland. Those statistics show how companies from different industries buy goods and services from each other," Ali-Yrkkö explains.

Local tax income generated by our business operations as well as cooperation with local operators, such as educational institutes, are an essential part of our societal impacts. UPM joins Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative to enhance sustainability in its supply chains2018-07-05T10:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 5 July 2018 at 10:00 EET) - UPM has joined Together for Sustainability (TfS), a chemical industry initiative that promotes and improves sustainability practises within its supply chains. By joining the initiative the member companies share a wide coverage of supplier data, such as audit reports and sustainability assessments performed by independent experts.

"UPM's traditional businesses are having high exposure to chemical industry supply chain, not only on chemical raw materials but also on equipment and services." says Ilkka Nurmi, Senior Vice President, UPM Sourcing. "While UPM is not a chemical company, we actively work on portfolio transformation and have a great growth potential in biofuels and biochemicals businesses where we are heavily entering the arena of chemistry", he continues.

TfS has established a standard approach for evaluating and improving the sustainabilty performance of suppliers. Evaluation covers key areas such as environmental impact, health and safety, labour and human rights as well as management and governance. The assessments and audits benefit both members and suppliers, who only go through the process once and avoid multiple assessments by different customers.
"We welcome UPM to the TfS Initiative and look forward to working together on our shared vision of improving supply chain sustainability. UPM brings a strong track record in sustainability to the membership base as well as the ambition to work on sustainability together with the TfS members," says Rüdiger Eberhard, TfS President and Senior Vice President, Head of Procurement (CPO) Evonik Industries.

"Responsible sourcing has been high on UPM's agenda for years and we have already done a lot of work to ensure the sustainability of our supply chains. The shape of sustainable labels is circular: UPM Raflatac announces APR-recognized wash-off film labels with recycled liners for Americas and Asia Pacific2018-06-27T14:00:00Z
(UPM Raflatac, Mills River, NC, USA, June 27, 2018 at 17:00 EET) - UPM Raflatac is taking another step forward in its drive to label a smarter future by announcing that it has developed a range of wash-off film labeling solutions for a variety of end uses that can help brands create a circular economy and also meet or even accelerate their ambitious sustainability targets.

These clear, white and metalized film label stocks - featuring UPM Raflatac's RW85C wash-off adhesive and a PET liner made from 90 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) content - have been recognized by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) as exceeding their strict standards for recyclable label products. Now available in the Americas and Asia Pacific market regions, the labels are ideal for labeling PET containers in the food, beverage, home care and personal care segments.

Thanks to the RW85C wash-off adhesive, the labels are able to undergo common PET recycling processes without contaminating any of the PET flake by-products. During the caustic washing process, the polypropylene labels easily separate from PET containers and float, allowing more high-value, clean PET flakes to be recovered. The clean flakes can then be converted back into PET containers, which promotes a circular economy and reduces the amount of plastic pollution in landfills and the environment.

"As the global drive to reduce plastic waste continues to gain speed, more and more packaging companies are looking for new and innovative solutions to maximize the recyclability of their PET containers," says Junion Zhao, Director, Films Business, APAC, UPM Raflatac. "We are pleased to bring these wash-off labeling materials to market for our customers and brand owners aiming to achieve their sustainability targets."

"Exceeding the APR's standards for recyclable label products on PET packaging was very important for us when we developed these new film labels with RW85C adhesive," adds Daryl Northcott, Director, Films Business, Americas, UPM Raflatac. "UPM Raflatac recently became an APR Recycling Demand Champion, which means we are committed to boosting circular packaging solutions and incorporating post-consumer recycled content into our materials, and these new label materials do exactly that."

For more information about and to order samples of UPM Raflatac's new wash-off film labeling solutions constructed with RW85C adhesive and a PET liner made from 90 percent PCR content, please click here.

For further information please contact:

Scott Sowers
Senior Communications Specialist, UPM Raflatac
Mon-Fri 8.00-17.00 ET
tel. +1 828-275-7261
scott.sowers@upmraflatac.com

UPM Raflatac
UPM Raflatac is labeling a smarter future by developing innovative and sustainable labeling solutions complemented with world-class service. UPM Raflatac launches sustainable RAFNXT+ versions of its BPA-free thermal label materials for retail, food and logistics applications2018-06-26T07:00:00Z
(UPM Raflatac, Helsinki, 26 June 2018 at 10:00 EET) - UPM Raflatac is introducing to the European market three new sustainable, BPA-free label materials for retail weigh-price and backroom labeling applications as well as for logistics labeling. The new products enable printers to offer BPA-free, legislation-compliant thermal labels that come with the added advantage of the unique RAFNXT+ formula of sustainability credentials.

Thermal papers have traditionally used Bisphenol A (BPA) as a color developer. However, new European Union legislation requires all thermal paper sold in Europe to be free of BPA after 2 January 2020.

RAFNXT+ is a next-generation solution for sustainable packaging that optimizes the use of raw materials. The label materials are proven to be 20% more carbon positive than standard paper materials, using less energy and water and generating less waste during their lifecycle. RAFNXT+ label products provide a competitive edge in terms of both sustainability and efficiency, with savings in downtime and start-up waste thanks to fewer reel changes as well as lower packaging and transportation costs. All products in the range are based on our unique Forest Positive lifecycle approach - the future formula for sustainable labeling.

Thermal Eco BPA Free NXT+FSC and Retail Eco BPA Free NXT+FSC label materials can be applied to packaging films and most common cardboards in short-life labeling applications such as retail weigh-scale, backroom and logistics labeling. They ensure compliance with relevant food contact regulations and can be paired with a variety of different adhesives to ensure optimal performance at a range of temperatures. All four label materials are FSC(TM) certified, which guarantees that the wood raw material used to manufacture them is legally sourced and originates from sustainably managed forests.

"Many brands are incorporating net-positive principles into their strategies and targets, and the Forest Positive concept and RAFNXT+ product range is our answer to this. Thanks to their resource optimization, these products are not only more carbon positive than our standard range, but they also help our customers improve their productivity. Our Thermal Eco range now included products that offer all these benefits and have the added advantage of being BPA free," explains Ville Pollari, Director, VIP & Prime segment, EMEIA, UPM Raflatac.

Discover UPM Raflatac's range of BPA-free label materials »

Download a photo of BPA-free label materials used in the retail industry »

For further information please contact:
Ville Pollari, Director, VIP & Prime segment, EMEIA, UPM Raflatac, tel. +358 9 427 353 29

UPM, Media Relations
Mon-Fri 9.00-16.00 EET
tel. +358 40 588 3284
media@upm.com

UPM Raflatac
UPM Raflatac is labeling a smarter future by developing innovative and sustainable labeling solutions complemented with world-class service. UPM Raflatac's smart label solution makes recycling smarter than ever2018-06-13T07:00:00Z
(UPM Raflatac, Helsinki, 13 June 2018 at 10:00 EET) - UPM Raflatac combines digitalization with circular economy. By adding RafMore smart label solution to its RafCycle® recycling process, UPM Raflatac is able to optimize the waste collection process from its customers. The smart labels added to the recycling containers and scanned by a mobile app tell when the customers' waste is ready to be collected.

Per Hasso, Warehouse assistant at Xellia Pharmaceuticals shows how RafMore application works.

RafCycle is a cost efficient waste recycling solution that collects label release liner waste from our partners throughout Europe. The RafMore smart label solution was tested with several RafCycle customers in Denmark and Sweden, and the waste material collected from these customers can be turned into new products at UPM Plattling paper mill in Germany where the paper release liners are de-siliconized and recycled into pulp and paper, closing the loop.

Previously, the waste collection process was done manually, which required a lot of communication between UPM Raflatac and the customers. By combining two innovative solutions, UPM Raflatac makes recycling smarter than ever.

"We now give our RafCycle customers unique codes through which we can track the exact amount of waste and give direct feedback via the RafMore mobile application. This helps us to better manage our logistic processes, making the waste collection process more efficient. By doing so, we offer our customers better service and help them to make more sustainable choices," says Claus Søndergaard, Sales Manager, Denmark, UPM Raflatac.

"We have been using RafCycle for recycling our glassine liners from our production for several years now and it has been a great solution. Recently, we implemented the new RafMore solution which made for logistic efficiency in our warehouse because it moved the planning of RafCycle pickups into the hands of UPM Raflatac. The mobile app itself is easy to install and use. On top of the logistic app solution, we now have a better overview of the total volume that has been moved from waste to a resource," says Per Hasso, Warehouse Assistant, Xellia Pharmaceuticals.

Xellia Pharmaceuticals was an early adopter within the pharmaceutical industry to take advantage of the RafCycle program and enter into a circular economy solution for their glassine waste.

RafMore is much more than a label - it is a completely new innovative solution that allows brand owners to turn ordinary product labels into smart packaging that tells an ever-evolving story. Using the latest digital printing technology, RafMore transforms traditional product packaging into connected packaging with a unique traceable identity. UPM Raflatac is planning to take RafMore into use in other countries.

UPM Raflatac leads the label industry with RafCycle®, an innovative recycling concept that offers a new life for label waste. Label recycling provides numerous benefits to printers, packers, brand-owners, and, of course, the environment. UPM Raflatac currently has more than 100 RafCycle customers globally.

Read more about RafMore smart label solution »

Watch a video about RafMore smart labels »

Read more about RafCycle recycling program »

Click here to download a photo of RafMore application in action »

For further information please contact:
Juha Virmavirta, Director, RafCycle Solutions, UPM Raflatac, tel. +358 20 416143

UPM, Media Relations
Mon-Fri 9.00-16.00 EET
tel. +358 40 588 3284
media@upm.com

UPM Raflatac
UPM Raflatac is labeling a smarter future by developing innovative and sustainable labeling solutions complemented with world-class service.
