Walki Films business area of UPM-Kymmene Corporation, which manufactures packaging films for the food industry, will start a new production line in Valkeakoski today (15.6.). The new line will produce laminates for vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to be used in the food industry. This investment will enable Walki Films to make also rigid films and films for boiling application. These are needed when food products are packed while still hot or when ready foods are heated e.g. in the microwave in their packages. The new products have been developed by Walki Films.
The value of the investment is 54 million finnmarks. The project is known by the name Mill 2000. The investment comprises a new factory hall of approximately 2,000 square meters. The line will be able to produce 6,000 tons of packaging films per year which means that the production capacity of Walki Films factories in Finland will grow by one third.
The new production line employs directly roughly 20 Walki Films people. Indirectly it will of course give work to many more.
The production of the line goes almost totally to exports. The biggest customer group is the European food industry. "We want to be market leaders in Europe as a supplier of gas barrier packages for the meat and cheese industry", says the Managing Director of Walki Films Timo Nykänen. "Our target is 15 % annual growth which means doubling our turnover in five years."
Besides Valkeakoski Walki Films has a factory in France and a joint venture company Walki Neoplástica B.V. in Holland. Subsidiaries in England, Germany, Denmark, Norway and the United States. The sales net covers in all 30 countries. The most important market area is Germany.
The turnover of Walki Films was last year 550 million finnmarks; personnel close to 500 of which 350 in Valkeakoski. The turnover of the profit center has quadrupled and the production quintupled during the last ten years.
