(UPM, Helsinki, November 7, 2007) – UPM ProFi Deck has won a second prize in the European Business Awards for the Environment - National Cleantech Finland® awardsin the Product category. UPM ProFi Deck is a new innovative product by UPM mainly made of recycled material. Assessment focused on how environmentally friendly and innovative the entries were, and their performance in the market.
The national Cleantech Finland® award was coordinated by the Finnish Innovation Fund, Sitra. The winners of the national competition will also participate in the EU-wide European Business Awards for the Environment which is organised by the Environment Directorate-General of European Commission. The winners of the latest international competition will be announced in Brussels in June 2008.
"UPM ProFi Deck is a good example of how UPM is renewing also through its new innovations. But it is only the first step. New steps are taken and this one is starting to grow rapidly. It is great that our new innovation has been noticed outside our company and we have been given recognition. We now got the second prize in the national competition, but our aim is to win the European first prize. But, it is always more important to be successful in business than competitions," Mr Vesa Sorri, Vice President, Corporate Venturing, emphasises.
UPM ProFi Deck is used for example in patios, playgrounds and jetties. It combines the best qualities of wood fibres and plastic and is an excellent example of combining material technology and recycling. The principle raw material for this wood-plastic composite is paper and plastic, which is surplus from UPM's label materials production.
The product has proven to be very durable, easy to handle and it can be used like wood. It is easy to install and it does not need any specific chemicals for surface treatment. It can be disposed of by incineration, recycling back to the production cycle or putting it to the household or energy waste. This means that UPM ProFi Deck is truly environmentally friendly.
The European Business Awards for the Environment spotlights companies that support sustainable development in their business operations. The companies receiving awards are considered pioneers in environmentally friendly policies, products and processes. The winner of the competition was Neste Oil Oyj with its NExBTL® renewable Diesel. The third prize was given to Trans Veritas Oy's Energy audit for transport chains. The Minister of the Environment Kimmo Tiilikainen, presented the awards to the winners.
