UPM-Kymmene orders the new fine paper machine for Changshu mill from Metso Paper

UPM-Kymmene orders the new fine paper machine with auxiliary systems and winders for its Changshu mill from Metso Paper, Inc. The value of the delivery is EUR 100 million.

UPM-Kymmene announced in December 2002 that it will build a new fine paper machine at its Changshu mill in China. The EUR 470 million investment will include a new paper machine line, a new automated reel storage, expansion of the sheeting plant, the product storage and a coating facility for the existing paper machine.

The investment will increase the capacity of the mill, widen the product range and improve the efficiency of the mill. The mill currently produces 350,000 tonnes of woodfree uncoated and matt coated fine papers annually on one paper machine line. The new paper machine line will produce 450,000 tonnes of office and other uncoated woodfree papers annually.
The existing paper machine line will also be rebuilt to produce mainly glossy light weight coated fine papers. These light weight coated fine papers exhibit high growth rates in magazine, catalogue and commercial printing end-uses in Changshu's natural markets.
The implementation of the Changshu investment project will take two years. The construction work on site started in September 2003 and the new paper machine is expected to go on stream in summer 2005.
