UPM-Kymmene has acquired an American paper siliconizer

UPM-Kymmene has signed a contract with the shareholders of US-based Daubert Industries Inc for acquiring its release paper and consumer products business. The business will be conducted under the name of DCP-Lohja Inc. UPM-Kymmene takes over the entire share capital of this company. As part of the payment, UPM-Kymmene has transfered 665,705 shares to the shareholders of Daubert Industries Inc.
The company has production plants in Dixon, Illinois and Cullman, Alabama. The company is the third biggest commercial producer of siliconized papers in the USA. The consumer products business comprises manufacturing of special adhesive tapes, e.g. for the construction sector and "do-it-yourself" end uses. The company's turnover for 1998 is estimated to reach about USD 100 million and the company employs about three hundred people.
The company will be a part of Lohjan Paperi, a profit centre in UPM-Kymmene's Packaging Materials Division. The acquisition strengthens Lohjan Paperi's position as one of the world's leading producers of siliconized papers and films. This profit centre also includes Sterling Coated Materials Ltd based at Manchester, which is the biggest commercial producer of siliconized products in the United Kingdom.
Daubert Coated Products has served as an agent to Lohjan Paperi and Sterling Coated Materials Ltd in the US market since 1991. The units specialise in different end-use sectors and their product mix therefore complement each other. The acquisition opens up new export opportunities for Lohjan Paperi, especially in hygiene-related end products.
In addition to release papers, Lohjan Paperi is manufacturing and coating packaging papers, primarily for the food industry and for technical end-use applications.
