UPM's Kaukas mills are currently planning investments for strengthening the mills' environmental protection to meet future needs. The investment plan is scheduled for completion by early December.
Investment costs are estimated to exceed EUR 4 million; the exact sum will be known on completion of the plan.
The investment plan covers sludge treatment and improvement in aeration at the existing effluent treatment plant, expansion of tank capacity at the pulp mill, and a separate sewage system from the pulp mill to the emergency basin in the effluent treatment plant.
The Kaukas biological effluent treatment plant is today one of the most modern plants in Finland. The plant was started up in the summer of 1992. The investment cost was EUR 25 million. The plant's annual operating costs total EUR 1.7 million. Since the start-up, performance of the plant has been enhanced continuously by modernising aerators and building a reception basin for sludge waste.
During the last decade, Kaukas has made investments in environmental protection amounting to EUR 50 million. The investments include air pollution control, wastewater treatment, landfill site, and waste management.
